Piero Gottardi, Thorsten Hens, The Survival Assumption and Existence of Competitive Equilibria When Asset Markets are Incomplete, Journal of Economic Theory, Vol. 71 (2), 1996. (Journal Article)
The paper studies the role and the formulation of the survival assumption with incomplete markets. We are able to show the existence of a competitive equilibrium when the agents' endowments lie on the boundary of their consumption set. However, for this some additional assumptions with respect to the complete market case are needed. These are joint restrictions on the asset structure and the distribution of the endowments and preferences. |

Michael Hess, Deduction over Mixed-Level Logic Representations for Text Passage Retrieval, In: Proceedings of the 1996 International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence (TAI'96), Toulouse, France, November 1996. (Conference or Workshop Paper)
A system is described that uses a mixed-level representation of (part of) the meaning of natural language documents (based on standard Horn Clause Logic) and a variable-depth search strategy that distinguishes between the different levels of abstraction in the knowledge representation to locate specific passages in the documents. Mixed-level representations as well as variable-depth search strategies are applicable in fields outside that of NLP. |

Josef Falkinger, Efficient private provision of public goods when by rewarding deviations from average, Journal of Public Economics, Vol. 62 (3), 1996. (Journal Article)
This paper proposes the following incentive scheme for the private provision of public goods: government should reward and penalize deviations from the mean contribution by an appropriate factor. This makes efficient contribution individually rational even if individuals see through the government budget constraint. |

Andrea Schenker-Wicki, The Swiss decision support system: State of the art and experiences, In: Fourth International Workshop on Decision Support Systems, Oxford University Press, 1996-10-07. (Conference or Workshop Paper)
Development of the Decision Support System (DSS) used by the National Emergency Operations Centre in Switzerland began immediately after the accident at Chernobyl. The system will evaluate acceptable countermeasures following the accidental release of radioactivity in order to reduce ingestion dose. The DSS - not designed for the very early phase following the accidental release of radioactivity - contains four different modules: threat assessment, generation of countermeasures, specification and multi-criteria decision-making at a technical and political level. The project is now in a consolidation phase and the DSS is used mainly for generating exercise scenarios and for training the decision-makers. The Swiss DSS was developed with the help of all the responsible persons and organisations in Switzerland, especially the Army Staff who support the National Emergency Operations Centre in the event of an accidental release of radioactivity. Following intensive contacts with the various user groups during the development phase, suggestions and corrections have already been included at a very early stage of the project. An additional database for use by the Army Staff has been installed so that consequences with respect to the most important countermeasures and criteria can be generated automatically. One of the National Emergency Operations Centre's most important experiences with this kind of decision support was the need to integrate the system into its standard operating procedures. Integration is important not only for professional use, but also for the maintenance (new releases) and updating of databases. Without clearly defined responsibilities, such systems quickly lose their value and important knowledge and experience gets lost. Operational integration, maintenance and updating of databases are the main tasks which have to be guaranteed if a DSS is to be ready for use and effectively to support the decision-makers in crisis situations. |

Jawad Berri, Mise en oeuvre de la m\'ethode d'exploration contextuelle pour le r\'esum\'e automatique de textes. Impl\'ementation du système SERAPHIN, In: Actes du colloque CLIM'96, Montr\'eal, Canada, June 1996. (Conference or Workshop Paper)
entier. |

We derive a result on the limit of certain sequences of principal eigenvalues associated with some elliptic eigenvalue problems. This result is then used to give a complete description of the global structure of the curves of positive steady states of a parameter dependent diffusive version of the classical logistic equation. In particular, we characterize the bifurcation values from infinity to positive steady states. The stability of the positive steady states as well as the asymptotic behaviour of positive solutions is also discussed. |

Martin Glinz, The Teacher: "Concepts!" The Student: "Tools!" - On the Number and Importance of Concepts, Methods, and Tools to be Taught in Software Engineering Education, In: Proceedings Third International Workshop on Software Engineering Education, 1996. (Conference or Workshop Paper published in Proceedings)
The paper discusses the number and importance of concepts, methods, and tools that should be taught in software engineering education. It is shown that emphasis is quite different from a teacher’s and from a student’ s viewpoint. As a synthesis of both viewpoints, I propose an approach that separates concepts and methods from tools in the curriculum and treats both with proper emphasis. The software engineering curriculum of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Zurich which follows these ideas is sketched. |

Marc Chesney, William Eid Júnior, Options listing and the volatility of the underling asset: a study on the derivative market function, Revista de administração de empresas, Vol. 36 (1), 1996. (Journal Article)
There are basic misunderstandings on derivative markets. Some professionals believe that they are a kind of casinos and have no utility for the investors. This work looks at the effects of options introduction in the Brazilian market, seeking for another benefit for this introduction: changes in the stocks risk leveI. Our results are the same found in the US and other markets: the options introduction reduces the stocks volatility. We also found that there is a slight indication that the volatility becames more stochastic with this alternative. |
