Die Schweiz zählt zu den bedeutendsten Wirtschaftsstandorten der Welt und deren Finanzsektor gehört zu den am stärksten regulierten Bereichen der Wirtschaft (SwissBanking, 2020). Ziel der Bankenregulierung ist einerseits der Kundenschutz und andererseits der Systemschutz bzw. der Schutz ganzer Bankensysteme (Matyja, 2014, S. 104). Für die Begründung von bankenregulatorischen Vorschriften steht vor allem die Bekämpfung von Systemrisiken im Zentrum (Matyja, 2014, S. 104). Ausgehend von der jüngsten Finanzkrise wurden strengere bankenregulatorische Massnahmen eingeführt. Grund für die Verschärfung der Bankenregulierung waren die «Too big to fail» bzw. die systemrelevanten Banken insbesondere deren ausgelöste Systemrisiken. Diese Finanzinstitute mussten mit Milliardensummen aus den Steuertöpfen von Staaten gerettet werden (Ehrhardt, 2018). Die USA und die Schweiz verfolgen teilweise eine differenzierte Ansicht der Bankenregulierung. Während in der Schweiz viel wert daraufgelegt wird, diese Regulierungen aufrechtzuerhalten, werden sie in den USA z.T. bereits wieder gelockert bzw. abgeschafft. Die vorliegende Arbeit soll in einem ersten Schritt einen Überblick über die Bankenregulierung in der Schweiz und in den USA sowie deren Veränderung im Laufe der Zeit geben. In einem zweiten Schritt sollen die Leser einen Einblick in die Auswirkungen der regulatorischen Interventionen auf den Bankensektor als Ganzes sowie auf die verschiedenen Geschäftsfelder von Banken kriegen. Schlussendlich soll den Lesern ein Vergleich zwischen der Schweizer und der US-amerikanischen Bankenregulierung aufgezeigt werden.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, changed circumstances have impacted the operations of microfinance institutions around the world. Moving restrictions adversely affect small businesses and threaten the livelihood of low-income clients. The difficulty for the institutions is to ensure the continuation of their operations without risking the health of employees and clients. This thesis describes and analyses four crises the microfinance industry has faced in the past. Based on the analysis of past crises, this thesis presents internal and external factors that provide insight into the challenges microfinance institutions might face in managing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

This paper will provide an overview of how Robo-Advisors elicit investor ESG preferences in their suitability assessment regarding the forthcoming changes in the regulation in MiFID 2 concerning the amendment of the delegated regulation (EU) 2017/575 which stipulates the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations and preferences into the investment advice and portfolio management. A sample of ten Robo-Advisor was studied to analyze the dierent approaches on how the Robo-Advisors elicited ESG preferences from their clients. This was achieved by completing the suitability assessments of the Robo-Advisors and comparing the surveys on pragmatic goals of how ESG preferences were requested with respect to other relevant topics such as time-component, nancial and risk measures versus ESG preferences. Subsequently, the strengths and weaknesses of the surveys were demonstrated. The ndings show the existence of a fragmented Robo-Advisor market which uses mainly four dierent implementations such as a) no ESG preferences are requested, b) check the box to invest in an ESG compliant portfolio, c) select ESG and non ESG preferences, and lastly d) select ESG preferences. Having analyzed the contemporary status of the suitability assessments with regards to ESG preferences, this paper proposes an optimized denition of ESG preference as well as key features for an online survey which is based on the strengths of the current questionnaires as well as the proposed denition. Thus, the suggested questionnaire's core features are the extent of the questionnaire itself, the balance between ESG preferences and other measures, requesting ESG as well as non ESG preferences, a clear denition of ESG preferences and the possibility of ranking ESG preferences. I

To understand how sustainable mutual funds vote at the annual general meetings of the firms in their portfolio, all voting decisions for 50 ESG mutual funds for the years 2006 to 2019 are gathered and analyzed. The aim of this paper is to assess if sustainable mutual funds fulfill their fiduciary duty towards their clients and vote in an independent and active manner. To approach for active ownership in voting, the opposition rate towards the management is observed. Further, determinants on the proposal- and on the fund-level are examined, to detect if they encourage or inhibit an active voting behavior. It is shown that none of the funds blindly trusts the managements’ recommendations. The funds seem to vote strategically and in a responsible way. The most pronounced determinant for the voting decision is the sponsor of a proposal. The funds oppose the management significantly more often on shareholder proposals than they do on management proposals. A second determinant is the content of the proposal, but with a smaller effect on the voting outcome. The observed fund characteristics show no significant impact. Neither a fund’s turnover nor the extent to which it integrates ESG criteria into its investment process seem to affect their voting decision. However, there is evidence for a time persistent heterogeneity between the funds, hinting at other fund-level factors that have an impact on voting. On average, ESG mutual funds vote in favor of proposals, independent of the sponsor and the topic. Over the years the overall support slightly increased. This suggests that the proposals more and more reflect the preferences of the ESG funds, mirroring the growing demand for sustainable practices in the whole financial sector. This paper is amongst the first to address the voting behavior of sustainable mutual funds. The consideration of shareholder sponsored director elections represents another novel approach.

Diese Arbeit untersucht, anhand des S&P 1500, den bekannten negativen Zusammenhang zwi-schen Nachhaltigkeit und Risiko. Dieser wird neu für Downside-Risk, Expected-Shortfall und implizite Volatilität bestätigt. Um herauszufinden, ob zusätzliche Risikoinformationen in den Unstimmigkeiten der Nachhaltigkeits-Ratings sind, wird ihr Einfluss analysiert. Dies wird allerdings widerlegt. Eine Quintil-Klassifizierung ermöglicht eine Analyse der besten, mittleren und schlechtesten Firmen. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Quintil-Effekte der Nachhaltigkeits-Performance auf die realisierten Risiko-Kennzahlen signifikant verschieden sind. Ein Zeitver-gleich ergibt, dass das beste Quintil ein tieferes durchschnittliches Risiko vorweist. Somit sind nachhaltige Firmen ebenfalls aus Risikoüberlegungen attraktiv. This paper studies how systematic liquidity risk in the foreign exchange market behaves during global economic crises. For this purpose, I examine the financial crisis of 2008 and the current Covid-19 crisis using the Roll's measure of liquidity commonality, which I calculate for low-frequency liquidity measures. My results confirm the existence of liquidity commonality in the foreign exchange market, reveal a doubling of liquidity commonality during the financial crisis, and show a slight increase during the Covid-19 pandemic

Die 2015 eingeführten Negativzinsen stellen ein Problem für Marktteilnehmer wie Pensionskassen auf dem Kapitalmarkt dar. Seit der Einführung der Negativzinsen können Pensionskassen kaum noch positive Renditen auf Anlageklassen wie zum Beispiel inländische Obligationen erzielen. Dies erschwert den Pensionskassen die Mindestrendite zur Deckung des Umwandlungssatzes zu erreichen, was die Finanzierung der gesprochenen und zukünftigen Renten erschwert. Zusätzlich zu den Negativzinsen hatten die Pensionskassen bereits zuvor mit der Alterung der Bevölkerung zu kämpfen. Dadurch, dass die Bevölkerung immer älter wird reichen die Renten nicht mehr bis ans Lebensende, sondern sind schon frühzeitig aufgebraucht. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es zu untersuchen, wie sich die Negativzinsen auf das Investitionsverhalten von Pensionskassen ausgewirkt haben und wie sich künftige Zinsänderungen auf das Investitionsverhalten von Pensionskassen auf dem Immobilienmarkt auswirken. Mithilfe von Experteninterviews wurden dazu die Auswirkungen von Zinsänderungen auf die Pensionskassen und auf den Immobilienmarkt beurteilt und analysiert.

Und sollten unsere Bronchien von wiederkehrenden Viren oder von Abgasen des intensiven und verantwortungslosen Gebrauchs fossiler Brennstoffe infiziert werden, nun, es wäre egal, meint der so hervorragende Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten, denn ein paar Dosen Bleichmittel würden ausreichen, um diesen Kollateralschaden zu reparieren. Der Patient Null wird noch gesucht. Nur der Präsident Null ist leicht auszumachen, auch wenn ihm andere auf der ganzen Welt auf den Fersen sind. Also lasst den Champagner fliessen, während die Erde weiter blutet!

Mutual funds often inform directly about their strategy in their name. This paper studies the accuracy of mutual fund names. Constructing a fund name history data set based on SEC filings and applying unsupervised machine learning techniques, we document that a significant fraction of mutual funds features an inaccurate name, i.e. a name which is not aligned with their actual investment style. Funds that provide an inaccurate name experienced lower fund inflows before the inaccuracy, under-performed in the year before, and charged higher expenses. Strikingly, after featuring an inaccurate name, funds see a worse risk-return trade-off due to an increased idiosyncratic risk. Finally, we document that investors experience difficulties in responding to this misleading information while at the same time, they do not profit from this deviating behavior of the funds. Thus, our results highlight the importance of regulatory intervention in the name dimension.
