Christoph Basten, Ragnar Juelsrud, Deposit Pricing with Cross-Selling Considerations. A New Micro Foundation for the Deposit Channel of Monetary Policy, In: NYU Stern Brownbag. 2021. (Conference Presentation) Using administrative data on deposits and loans of every Norwegian with every Norwegian bank, we show that opening of a deposit account makes a household 17% more likely to borrow from the same bank later. This motivates banks to accept lower deposit spreads from likely future borrowers, and even accept negative deposit spreads in periods of low policy rates. Further, as future cross-selling profits are discounted less in lower rate periods, deposit spreads increase in policy rates. We show this to provide a new micro foundation for part of the Deposit Channel of Monetary Policy.

Christoph Basten, Anastasia Kartasheva, Anastasia Kartasheva, Carol Park, The Impact of Rating Standards on Financial Institution Risk-Taking. Evidence from Catastrophe Risks in Insurance., In: Annual Congress of the Financial Management Association (FMA). 2021. (Conference Presentation) We analyze how financial institutions adjust their risk-taking in response to stricter rating standards. Building on the premise that the demand for financial institutions services depends on their financial strength which is communicated by a rating, we argue that a more stringent rating standard induces a di¤erential response. Financial institutions facing high (low) elasticity of demand to ratings and moderate (high) cost of raising capital improve (weaken) their financial strength in response to a stricter rating standard. We empirically assess the response to stricter standards using a significant change of the rating methodology for natural catastrophe risk exposures of insurers in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. We find the differential response, revealing that lower financial strength insurers serving customers with low elasticity of demand to financial strength became more risky in response to the standard change.

Christoph Basten, Steven Ongena, Steven Ongena, Mortgage Lending through a FinTech Web Platform.The Roles of Competition, Diversification, and Automation., In: Annual Meeting of the Swiss Society for Economics and Statistics. 2021. (Conference Presentation) We analyze how banks offer and price mortgages through an online platform where they reach also regions in which they lack branches. We use unique data on responses from different banks to each applying household and exploit exogenous variation in prior competition. We find banks to offer more often and at lower margins to more concentrated markets, arguably motivated by more profitable refinancing and cross-selling opportunities. Banks also improve their inter-regional portfolio diversification with more attractive offers to regions more complementary to home markets. Choices become increasingly automated, reducing operating costs.
