Yuhan Ye, Hierarchical Clustering Method for Country Equity Allocation, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2019. (Master's Thesis)
This thesis applies graph theory and a new machine learning method, Hierarchical Clustering,
to solve strategic asset allocation problem. The major investment context is equity portfolio
allocation on the country level.
This thesis stands from the view point of a global investor and all countries in MSCI World
Index have been taken into account. The portfolio constructed by Hierarchical Risk Parity
(HRP) method is compared to traditional Minimum Variance Portfolio (MVP) and Inverse
Variance Portfolio (IVP) in out-of-sample backtests. Market portfolio is measured as the
benchmark portfolio. Different lookback periods (5 years/3 years) and rebalancing periods (1
year/6 months) have been taken into consideration. T-tests are conducted to check whether
the average returns are significantly different. The study also goes further to investigate the
how HRP performs in developed and emerging markets separately.
This thesis provides the first attempt of applying HRP algorithm to country equity allocation.
The out-of-sample backtests results show that HRP delivers better risk-returns performance compared to traditional MVP and IVP methods. However, the HRP performance still cannot beat the market portfolio. The bull market trend of S&P 500 in the last 10 years and underweight of the U.S. equity market of HRP could possibly explain this observation. |

Gut getarnter Lockvogel

Michael Schnetzer, Carry-Based Expected Returns for Strategic Asset Allocation, The Journal of Portfolio Management, Vol. 45 (2), 2019. (Journal Article)
In this article, the author investigates expected return forecasting methodologies and their application in an asset allocation context. Although present value model–related methods are popular in practice, little is known about their performance when used for asset allocation. An intuitive and traceable carry-based method is developed by the author and tested and benchmarked against competing alternatives. The results are evaluated from different perspectives, and the obtained returns are regressed on well-known risk factors. The proposed methodology outperformed other return forecasting variants on various metrics and generated significant alphas regardless of the weight determination approach used. The methodology can be extended to further asset classes and geographic regions and provides a framework for allocating assets strategically. |

Thorsten Hens, Sabine Elmiger, Economic Foundations for Finance : From Main Street to Wall Street, Springer, Cham, 2019. (Book/Research Monograph)
This book provides readers with essential concepts from financial economics for an integrated study of the financial system and the real economy. It discusses how long-term market prices are determined and affected by population growth, technological progress and non-renewable resources. The meaning of market prices is examined from the perspective of households and from the perspective of firms. The book therefore connects different fields of finance, which usually focus only on either the households’ side or the firms’ side. |

Meike A S Bradbury, Thorsten Hens, Stefan Zeisberger, How Persistent are the Effects of Experience Sampling on Investor Behavior?, Journal of Banking and Finance, Vol. 98, 2019. (Journal Article)
Investor behavior was shown to be considerably different when the risk-return tradeoff is presented by experience sampling as opposed to a descriptive communication. We analyze the persistency of this difference in a setting in which investors are faced with multiple decisions over time and are consequently able to adjust the risk level they initially chose. For this we use an experimental setting with repeated investment decisions over multiple trading days, and we also test a new form of risk simulation in which wealth paths over time are presented rather than just final outcomes. After investors’ initial decisions, for which we confirm previous findings, we do not find persistent differences of simulation-based learning on investors’ risk-taking behavior. With regards to trading volume, only a simulation in which investors see wealth paths and not only final outcomes leads to lower trading frequency soon after the initial asset allocation. |

Matthias von Arnim, Thorsten Hens, Isabella Kooij, Warum grosse Wikifolios oft besser performen als Fonds, In: finanzen.net, 11 December 2018. (Media Coverage)

Thorsten Hens, Terje Lensberg, Klaus Reiner Schenk-Hoppé, Front-Running and Market Quality: An Evolutionary Perspective on High Frequency Trading, International Review of Finance, Vol. 18 (4), 2018. (Journal Article)
We study front-running by high-frequency traders (HFTs) in a limit order model with continuous trading. The model describes an evolutionary equilibrium of low-frequency traders who compete in portfolio management services by offering investment styles. The introduction of front-runners inflicts heavy losses on speculators, while leaving passive investors relatively unscathed. This encourages investment in the market portfolio and markedly reduces overall turnover. Speculative trading persists despite its lower profitability. By most measures, market quality is not affected to any significant extent by front-running HFTs. |

Thorsten Hens, Fit für die Zukunft : Welches Rüstzeug braucht der Banker von morgen?, In: Finanz und Wirtschaft, p. 19, 12 November 2018. (Newspaper Article)
