Abstract Text Blockchains based on the Proof of Stake consensus protocol have gained increasing attention in recent years. Previous research focuses on matters of energy consumption, decentralization and security of such blockchains. However, there is a lack of thorough studies concerning their fairness. Our contribution is to provide a careful investigation of fairness of the Tezos blockchain. We look at the reward distribution and apply fairness measures such as the Gini or Nakamoto index to the rewards and stakes of the Tezos blockchain participants. Our analysis indicates that certain participants of the Tezos blockchain consensus mechanism receive disproportionately more rewards than others. They do share the feature of having entered the system at a very early stage. Further, we find that the various Tezos protocol upgrades affect the reward distribution, meaning that the fairness of Tezos is impacted by its governance.
Zusammenfassung Blockchains basierend auf dem Proof of Stake consensus Protokoll bekommen wachsende Aufmerksamkeit in den letzten Jahren. Bisherige Forschung konzentriert sich auf Fragen des Energieverbrauchs, der Dezentralisierung und der Sicherheit solcher Blockchains. Gründliche Fairness Studien fehlen jedoch. Unser Beitrag besteht daraus eine sorgfältige Untersuchung der Fairnness der Tezos blockchain bereitzustellen. Wir schauen die Belohnungsverteilung an und wenden die Fairness Messungen, wie Gini oder Nakamoto index, auf die Einsätze und Belohnungen der Tezos blockchain Teilnehmer an. Diese Untersuchungen zeigen, dass einige Teilnehmer einen unproportional grösseren Anteil bekommen. Dennoch haben sie gemeinsam, dass sie alle dem System sehr früh beigetreten sind. Weiter stellen wir fest, dass die Tezos Protokoll Aktualisierungen einen Einfluss auf die Belohnungsverteilung und somit die Fairness haben.
