Title Spatial Specificity of Unit Process Data in Life Cycle Inventory Databases

Abstract Text The goal of Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) is to estimate the environmental impact of a product or service by analysing the outputs to the environment of each step in the product's life cycle. To do this, Unit-Process data is necessary which represent individual self contained steps in this life cycle. In this study I analyse the spatial specificity, an important aspect of data quality, of Unit-Processes across multiple Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) databases. Unit-Processes are classified into thematic categories and the regionalisation of Unit-Processes per category is studied using qualitative and quantitative approaches. A comparison of the databases is carried out resulting in the conclusion that while there are certain Unit-Process classes with systematically high or low regionalisation a lot of the spatial specificity of the data is highly reliant on data sources.
Zusammenfassung Das Ziel von Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) ist die Abschätzung davon, wie ein Produkt oder eine Dienstleistung die Umwelt belastet durch die Analyse von den Outputs jedes Schrittes im Lebenszyklus dieses Produktes. Um dies zu tun sind Einheitsprozesse notwendig welche einzelne, in sich abgeschlossene Schritte des Lebenszyklusses repräsentieren. In dieser Studie analysiere ich die räumliche Spezifität von Einheitsprozessen, ein wichtiges Mass von Datenqualität, über mehrere Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) Datenbanken. Enheitsprozesse werden klassifiziert nach thematischen Kategorien und die Regionalisierung von Einheitsprozessen wird für jede Kategorie untersucht durch qualitative und quantitative Verfahren. Ein Vergleich der Datenbanken wird durchgeführt mit der Schlussfolgerung, dass während manche Einheitsprozesse durchaus systematisch hohe oder tiefe Regionalisierung aufweisen, ein grosser Anteil der räumlichen Spezifität von den Datenquellen abhängt.
