Investments in fiber-based infrastructures are an important stimulus for economic development. We discuss international fiber to the home policies and the trade-offs to be solved in their implementation.

This article develops a contest model to compare social welfare in homogeneous leagues in which all clubs maximize identical objective functions with mixed leagues in which clubs maximize different objective functions. We show that homogeneous leagues in which all clubs are profit maximizers dominate all other leagues. Mixed leagues in which small-market clubs are profit maximizers and large-market clubs are win maximizers (type-I mixed leagues) are dominated by all other leagues. From a welfare perspective, large-market clubs win too often in (purely) win-maximizing and type-I mixed leagues; whereas, small-market clubs win too many games in (purely) profit-maximizing leagues and in mixed leagues in which largemarket clubs are profit maximizers and small-market clubs are win maximizers (type-II mixed leagues). These results have important policy implications: Social welfare will increase if clubs are reorganized from non-profit member associations to profit-maximizing corporations. Moreover, we show that revenue sharing decreases (increases) social welfare in mixed (homogeneous) leagues.

Various regulatory remedies deal with monopolistic bottlenecks in network industries. In telecommunications, railways and post, the European regulatory provisions seem appropriate.

Wie viele andere Branchen befindet sich auch die Automobilbranche in einem voranschreitenden Modularisierungsprozess. Das betrifft sowohl die Produktion als auch die Distribution. Standardisierung und Modularisierung der Wertschöpfungsaktivitäten und -prozesse führen jedoch zu einem betriebswirtschaftlichen Zielkonflikt: die Erzielung von Effizienzvorteilen einerseits und Differenzierungsmöglichkeiten andererseits. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird am Beispiel der Automobilindustrie dargestellt, wie Unternehmen dem Differenzierungsdilemma entgehen können. Dazu werden markenspezifische Wertschöpfungsorganisationen im Rahmen von Integrationsmessungen systematisiert und verglichen. Anhand der Merkmale unterschiedlicher Organisationsformate wird der Zusammenhang zwischen Wertschöpfungsorganisation und Differenzierungspotential diskutiert. Es zeigt sich, dass diejenigen Hersteller, die sowohl in der Produktion als auch in der Distribution eine hohe Wertschöpfungskontrolle und eine hohe Bindungsintensität der strategisch bedeutenden Lieferanten beziehungsweise Händler aufweisen, Wettbewerbsvorteile gegenüber ihren Konkurrenten erzielen und ein strategisch relevantes Differenzierungspotential erreichen.

Increasing financial disparity and spiralling wages in European football have triggered a debate about the introduction of salary caps. This paper provides a theoretical model of a team sports leagues and studies the welfare effect of salary caps. It shows that salary caps will increase competitive balance and decrease overall salary payments within the league. The resulting effect on social welfare is counter-intuitive and depends on the preference of fans for aggregate talent and for competitive balance. A salary cap that binds only for large market clubs will increase social welfare if fans prefer aggregate talent despite the fact that the salary cap will result in lower aggregate talent. If fans prefer competitive balance, on the other hand, any binding salary cap will reduce social welfare.

Mit der Liberalisierung des Postmarktes geht nicht zuletzt die Befürchtung einher, dass minimale Standards des Service public nicht mehr erbracht werden. Ein zentrales Element der vom Bundesrat vorgelegten neuen Postgesetzgebung ist daher die Beauftragung der Post mit der Grundversorgung. In der praktischen Umsetzung ergeben sich jedoch Schwierigkeiten: Definition, Umfang und die Art der Finanzierung des Auftrages beeinflussen wesentlich die Funktionsfähigkeit des Wettbewerbs.

In this paper, we provide an analysis of the principal economic issues in the professional team sports industry. We characterize the major peculiarities of this industry and give an overview of the most important league policy measures that are implemented to provide cross subsidies among teams. In particular, we focus on salary caps and compare the US major leagues with the European football leagues. Moreover, we show how to design an efficient salary cap system in the European football leagues.
