In dieser Masterarbeit wird untersucht, ob das Kooperationsverhalten durch menschliche Äusserlichkeiten beeinflusst wird. Dies wird mittels der Britischen TV-Show Golden Balls untersucht. Diese Show enthält ein Gefangenendilemma, das Kooperation untersuchen lässt. Zusätzlich wurden die Teilnehmer der TV-Show von 339 unabhängigen Personen nach ihrer Äusserlichkeit in Bezug auf gutaussehend, ehrlich, sympathisch und vertrauenswürdig beurteilt. Eine Probit Regression zeigt, dass ehrliches Aussehen einen negativen und vertrauenswürdig einen positiven Einfluss auf die Kooperation hat. Wenn eine Person ehrlich wirkt, ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit tiefer, dass sie kooperieren wird. Äusserlichkeiten des Gegenspielers haben einzeln einen positiven Einfluss auf das Kooperationsverhalten des Spielers, womit ein Schönheitsbonus nachgewiesen werden kann. Das Äusserliche steht in keinem Zusammenhang mit den ausgestrahlten Staffeln.

In dieser Arbeit wird untersucht, ob Äusserlichkeiten einen Einfluss auf die Wahrnehmung von Lügen haben. Dazu werden Bilder der Gesichter von Kandidaten aus der britischen TV-Spielshow „Golden Balls“ in einer Umfrage mit 703 Teilnehmern nach Äusserlichkeiten bewertet. Die Bewertungen der Gesichter der Kandidaten werden anschliessend mit dem Spielverhalten der entsprechenden Kandidaten in Bezug auf Lügen verglichen. Die Auswertung der Daten zeigt, dass zwischen den Merkmalen gutaussehen, ehrlich, vertrauenswürdig, sympathisch und Lügen signifikant negative Korrelationen bestehen. Ausserdem zeigt die Analyse von Probitmodellen, dass je sympathischer eine Person wirkt, desto geringer ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass die Person lügt. Den entscheidenden Einfluss auf das Lügen in der Spielshow haben allerdings strategische Überlegungen und nicht die Äusserlichkeiten.

Diese Arbeit eröffnet eine Perspektive auf die Literatur zur Anreizsetzung in einem Prinzipal-Agenten Problem bei mehrdimensionalen Aufgaben im Second Best. Besprochen werden die optimale Anreizsetzung im LEN-Modellrahmen, Anreizsetzung unter erweiterten Annahmen bezüglich der Leistungsindikatoren sowie Anreizsetzung mit Hilfe nichtmonetärer Anreize.

Diese Arbeit untersucht die Entwicklungen der Revealed Preference Theorie seit der Publikation von Samuelsons Paper (1938) zum Konsumverhalten. Das daraus entstandene GARP-Axiom von Varian (1981) leistet einen bemerkenswerten Beitrag zur theoretischen und experimentellen Untersuchung der Rationalität im Entscheidungsverhalten von Individuen. Ein wichtiger Forschungszweig stellt dabei die Untersuchung von Rationalität bei altruistischem Verhalten dar. Das Design des GARP-Tests kann die Resultate entscheidend beeinflussen. Power Indices geben Aufschluss darüber, wie aussagekräftig ein GARP-Test tatsächlich ist. Auch hier zeigt sich jedoch, dass nicht jeder Power Index gleich fordernd ist. Die Revealed Preference Theorie kann aufgrund ihrer Choice-Basierung auch der Verhaltensökonomie sowie der Wohlfahrtstheorie neue Impulse geben.

Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht asymmetrische und symmetrische All-Pay Auktionen mit zwei Spielern in Hinblick auf ihre Unterschiede in der Gleichgewichtscharakteristik. Der Autor vergleicht dabei Auktionen, in denen der Grad der Asymmetrie unterschiedlich ausgeprägt ist und Investitionen entweder unbedingt oder bedingt sind. Es zeigt sich, dass asymmetrische und symmetrische Auktionen, unabhängig von der Annahme über die Investitionen, zu ähnlichen Ergebnissen führen können und Wertschätzungs- beziehungsweise Kostenasymmetrien qualitativ die gleichen Einflüsse auf verschiedene ökonomische Grössen haben.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird der Einfluss von verbesserter Bahnqualität auf den motorisierten Privatverkehr in Deutschland untersucht. Ziel ist es eine Evidenz dafür zu finden, dass eine Verminderung der Anzahl beteiligter Fahrzeuge am Strassenverkehr zu einer Reduktion des Ausstosses luftverschmutzender Schadstoffe führt. Aufgrund der Endogenität der Bahnqualität wird die Regression mittels einer Instrumentalvariable ausgeführt. Als Instrumentvariable wurde die Beschaffungsmethode mit Wettbewerb für den Auftrag zum Bau von Bahnstrecken gewählt. Es resultiert ein negativer Einfluss von Bahnqualität auf Anzahl Fahrzeuge auf Bundestrassen, Landesstrassen und Kreisstrassen. Der berechnete Wert befindet sich jedoch auf einem nicht signifikanten Niveau. Ebenfalls ist die Instrumentalvariable für die Strassenklasse Autobahn nicht legitim. Der Effekt Bahnqualität auf die Klasse Autobahn kann demnach nicht interpretiert werden.

We examine a “Rotten Kid” model (Becker 1974) where a player with social preferences interacts with an egoistic player. We assume that social preferences are intentionbased rather than outcome-based. In a very general multi-stage setting we show that any equilibrium must involve mutually unkind behavior of both players, endogenously generating negative rather than positive emotions. In a large class of two-stage games that includes principal-agent and gift-giving games, this prevents the equilibrium from being materially Pareto efficient. Compared to the subgame-perfect equilibrium without social preferences, efficiency is still generally increased. On the other hand, the materialistic player has lower whereas the reciprocal player has higher material payoffs, so that reciprocity does not increase equity: For sufficiently strong reciprocity concerns, the materialistic player ends up with a negligible share of the gains from trade.

I present a game-theoretic model where economic competition and attention competition are interdependent. On the one hand the effort to attract consumer attention depends on the value of attention to the firm which depends on the grade of price competition among all perceived firms. On the other hand attracting attention involves costs which must be covered by the earnings from competition. It is the task of this paper to clarify the consequences of such an interdependence between attention competition and economic competition for prices, attention effort and market structure as determined by the strategic equilibrium. Under limited attention the market as perceived by consumers and not the effective market is relevant to the firms which implies that prices also reflect the scarcity of attention. Less attentive consumers lead to higher prices but at the same time getting attention is more valuable which intensifies the competition for attention and leads to higher attention costs. I show that if attention competition is relatively inelastic or the commodities are strong substitutes then the gains from consumer inattention outweigh the costs of attracting attention which leads to higher profits and larger effective markets.

Public agencies rely on two key modes to procure goods and services: auctions and direct negotiations. The relative advantages of these two modes are still imperfectly understood. This paper therefore studies public procurement of regional passenger railway services in Germany, where regional agencies can use auctions and negotiations to procure regional passenger rail services. This offers the unique opportunity to assess the two procurement modes within the same institutional and legal framework. We first characterize the decisions of the agency in a simple reduced form framework of negotiations and auctions. This analysis suggests accounting for the endogeneity of the choice of procurement mode by estimating the mode of procurement, quantity and price simultaneously. We then test this framework using information on lines that were auctioned and lines that were directly negotiated with the former monopolist. Results indicate (i) endogeneity of procurement choice can be fully characterized by observed line characteristics; (ii) frequency of service is 16 percent higher on lines that were auctioned compared to lines that were negotiated, and (iii) the procurement price is 25 percent lower on auctioned lines than on those with direct negotiations. Taken together, these results indicate a significant efficiency enhancing effect of auctions.

Higher-dimensional symmetric games become of more and more importance for applied micro- and macroeconomic research. Standard approaches to uniqueness of equilibria have the drawback that they are restrictive or not easy to evaluate analytically. In this paper I provide some general but comparably simple tools to verify whether a symmetric game has a unique symmetric equilibrium or not. I distinguish between the possibility of multiple symmetric equilibria and asymmetric equilibria which may be economically interesting and is useful to gain further insights into the causes of asymmetric equilibria in symmetric games with higher-dimensional strategy spaces. Moreover, symmetric games may be used to derive some properties of the equilibrium set of certain asymmetric versions of the symmetric game. I further use my approach to discuss the relationship between stability and (in)existence of multiple symmetric equilibria. While there is an equivalence between stability, inexistence of multiple symmetric equilibria and the unimportance of strategic effects for the comparative statics, this relationship breaks down in higher dimensions. Stability under symmetric adjustments is a minimum requirement of a symmetric equilibrium for reasonable comparative statics of symmetric changes. Finally, I present an alternative condition for a symmetric equilibrium to be a local contraction which is more general than the conventional approach of diagonal dominance and yet simpler to evaluate than the eigenvalue condition of continuous adjustment processes.

The paper introduces a simple framework for analyzing the environmental effects of local transportation policies, and it reviews some evidence. In several cases, subsidies for local public transportation have led to substantial reductions in road transportation and have thereby reduced externalities. Some but not all estimates suggest positive overall welfare effects of such policies. In the rare cases where road pricing has been applied, it has helped to reduce automobile transportation, and it has led to environmental improvements. The experience with specific driving restrictions like “days without cars” and “low emission zones” has been mixed. Local transportation policy can have a useful role to play as a complement to national policy instruments, but neither efficiency nor effectiveness can be taken for granted.

In modern economies the information problem is less one of getting information but one of receiving too much information. This abundance of information creates a scarcity of attention and, if information senders can influence their chance of perception, a competition for attention aside the conventional economic competition e.g. for consumer budget. The following two facts are well documented by marketing and psychological research and serve as main building blocks for my model: 1) consumers are not capable of considering the entire set of items if this set is large. 2) information senders can positively influence their chance of perception by sending a relative stronger signal. Using a game theoretic, microfounded approach I investigate how the interdependence of economic and perceptional competition affect the market equilibrium at the positive level. The main results are in an information rich economy traditional economic variables as market prices reflect psychological limitations of consumers which implies that market size and other traditional measures of competition may give misleading measures of competition. In general, whether firms benefit or not from perceptual limitations of consumers depends on how well firms can influence their chance of perception (the toughness of the attention competition) and how much revenue they can extract from consumers (the severity of the economic competition). The more the items are substitutable the more likely firms are to extract additional profits because of limited attention, which implies larger markets to occur under free entry. Using a standard model of circular product differentiation I show that if consumers are inattentive then equilibrium diversity and prices are higher and consumers choose a ”bad” variety more often compared to the hypothetical case of unlimited attention capacities. This shows that if the allocation problem of attention is left to be solved by the market this might result in a very undesirable result. Further, the implications of limited attention for models of informative advertising is discussed. I show that the cause why consumers have limited information (because they receive only little information or because of limited attention) matters for policy implications. Under limited attention the advice originating from models of informative advertising may have no or the wrong effect if limited attention is not taken into account. Moreover, models of informative advertising without limited attention have serious problems matching the pattern of the U.S. advertising data of the last three decades. Finally, I extend the game theoretic literature on uniqueness and stability by some further tools for symmetric games which help to establish certain results of my models but also are of self-interest. Dieser Informationsüberschuss generiert eine Knappheit der Aufmerksamkeit und, wenn die Informationssender ihre Wahrnehmungswahrscheinlichkeit beeinflussen können, auch einen Wettbewerb um die Aufmerksamkeit zusätzlich zum konventionellen Wettbewerb um das Budget der Konsumenten. Die folgenden beiden Fakten sind durch die Marketing-Literatur und die Literatur der Wahrnehmungspsychologie gut dokumentiert und dienen als Grundbausteine meines Modells: 1) die Individuen nicht in der Lage sind alle Information zu verarbeiten, die sie sehen. 2) die Informationssender ihre Wahrnehmungschance positiv durch relativ starke eigene Signale beeinflussen können. Mittels einem spieltheoretischen, mikrofundierten Ansatz untersuche ich wie die Interdependenz von ökonomischem und perzeptionellem Wettbewerb das Marktgleichgewicht beeinflusst. Die zentralen Resultate sind in einer informationsreichen Ökonomie reflektieren traditionelle Marktvariablen wie der Preis psychologische Grenzen der Konsumenten, was zur Folge hat, dass traditionelle Masse des Wettbewerbs, wie die Anzahl der Mitstreiter, falsche Vorhersagen generieren. Ob die Firmen von der beschränkten Aufmerksamkeit der Konsumenten profitieren können, hängt im allgemeinen davon ab, wie gut die Firmen ihre Wahrnehmungschance beeinflussen können und wie stark der ökonomische Wettbewerb ausgeprägt ist. Je mehr die Güter substituierbar sind, umso eher können die Firmen, wegen der begrenzten Aufmerksamkeit, zusätzliche Erträge generieren, was dann wiederum unter freiem Marktzugang zu grösseren Märkten führt. Unter Verwendung eines Standard-Modells der zirkulären Produktdifferenzierung zeige ich, dass wenn die Konsumenten begrenzt aufmerksam sind, die gleichgewichtige Diversität sowie die Preise höher sind und Konsumenten tendenziell häufiger eine für sie schlechte Alternative wählen. Falls also das Problem der Aufmerksamkeitsallokation durch einen Marktmechanismus gel¨st wird, führt dies möglicherweise zu einem nicht wünschenswerten Endresultat. Im weiteren diskutiere ich die Implikationen von begrenzter Aufmerksamkeit für Modelle von informativer Werbung. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass die Ursachen begrenzter Information (weil die Konsumenten zu wenig Information erhalten oder weil sie gar nicht alle Information wahrnehmen können) eine entscheidende Rolle spielen für wirtschaftspolitische Massnahmen. Unter beschränkter Aufmerksamkeit können Massnahmen, die aus solchen Modellen ohne spezielle Berücksichtigung der Aufmerksamkeitsschranken abgeleitet wurden, keine oder eine falsche Wirkung entfalten. Ausserdem haben solche Modelle grösste Mühe, das Muster der U.S. Werbedaten der letzten dreissig Jahre zu erklären, falls beschränkte Aufmerksamkeit nicht berücksichtigt wird. Zum Schluss erweitere ich die rein spieltheoretische Literatur zu Eindeutigkeit und Stabilität um einige neue Tools, welche äussert hilfreich sind um gewisse Resultate meiner Modelle nachzuweisen und, als Werkzeuge, von eigenständigem Interesse sind.

The paper shows that several game-theoretic solution concepts provide similar comparative statics predictions over a wide class of games. I start from the observation that, in many experiments, behavior is affected by parameter shifts that leave the Nash equilibrium unchanged. I explain the direction of change with a heuristic structural approach, using properties such as strategic complementarities and increasing differences. I show that the approach is consistent with general comparative statics results for (i) the Nash equilibrium of a game with perturbed payoff functions, (ii) the quantal response equilibrium, (iii) level-k reasoning. I also relate the structural approach to equilibrium selection concepts.

We consider a two-stage game with cost-reducing investments followed by a linear differentiated Cournot duopoly. With competition inversely parameterized by the extent of product differentiation, investment in the subgame perfect equilibrium is typically minimal for intermediate levels of competition. Laboratory experiments partly confirm the U-shape in a reduced one-stage version of the game. In the two-stage version, there is no evidence for positive effects of moving from intermediate to intense competition.

We analyse a two-country model of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and R&Doffshoring. In the basic model, two firms, each of which is originally situated in only one of the two countries, first decide whether to build a plant abroad. Then, they decide whether to relocate R&D activities offshore. Finally, they engage in product-market competition. In this model, FDI liberalization causes a relocation of R&D activities if intrafirm communication is sufficiently well developed, external spillovers are substantial, competition is not too strong and foreign markets are not too small. Surprisingly, such a relocation of R&D activities usually nevertheless increases domestic welfare.
