Matthias W Uhl, Explaining US Consumer Behavior with News Sentiment, ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems, Vol. 2 (2), 2011. (Journal Article)
We introduce a novel dataset with a news sentiment index that was constructed from a selection of over 300,000 newspaper articles from five of the top ten U.S. newspapers by circulation. By constructing ARMA models, we show that news and consumer sentiment, when combined with other macroeconomic variables, achieve statistically significant results to explain changes in private consumption. We make three distinct findings with respect to sentiment in consumption behavior models: first, both consumer and news sentiment add explanatory power and statistical significance to conventional consumer behavior models. Second, consumer sentiment, measured by the University of Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment, adds more explanatory power and statistical significance than news sentiment when tested individually. Third, news sentiment is able to determine the signs of all coefficients in the model correctly, whereas consumer sentiment does not. In general, we conclude that news sentiment is a useful variable to add in consumer behavior models, especially when coupled with consumer sentiment and other macroeconomic variables. Tested individually, news sentiment is as good a proxy as personal income for explaining private consumption growth when tested individually. |

Martin Brown, Steven Ongena, Pinar Yeşin, Foreign currency borrowing by small firms in the transition economies, Journal of Financial Intermediation, Vol. 20 (3), 2011. (Journal Article)
We examine the firm- and country-level determinants of foreign currency borrowing by small firms, using information on the most recent loan extended to 3101 firms in 25 transition countries between 2002 and 2005. Our results suggest that foreign currency borrowing is much stronger related to firm-level foreign currency revenues than it is to country-level interest rate differentials. Supporting the conclusion that carry-trade behavior is not the key driver of foreign currency borrowing in our sample we find no evidence that firm-level indicators of distress costs or financial transparency affect loan currency denomination. Overall, our findings suggest that retail clients which do take foreign currency loans are better equipped to bear the corresponding currency risks than is commonly thought. Policy makers should therefore take a closer look at the characteristics of borrowers before implementing regulations which are aimed at curbing foreign currency loans. |

Daniel Jungen, Die Bedeutung von Gold im Laufe der Zeit unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Gold als sicherer Hafen in Krisenzeiten, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2011. (Bachelor's Thesis)
English: The point of origin for this work is a historical review about the history of gold, with the main focus on the time between 1850 and present day. The significance of gold for the monetary policy of the western world is presented as well as the classical gold standard and the Bretton-Woods system. In the second part the influence that crisis and natural disasters are having on the gold price will be observed and discussed. This observation is to further prove the quality characteristics of gold as "safe haven". Part three consists of examining the insight that part two provided, to further analyze the behavior of the investors, and also to venture a prediction about the development of the gold price in future crisis. |

Andreas Marti, Kupferinvestments: Titel- versus Portfolioperformance, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2011. (Bachelor's Thesis)
