(Book Chapter) Charging for IP-based communications determines the overall term for metering or monitoring, accounting, pricing, charge calculation, and billing. These five actions are detailed in this chapter to provide a clear view on their interdependencies as well as their relations to distributed computing. Since an ubiquitous computing approach does require communication means between all entities involved, the provisioning of these communication channels is supported typically by commercial service providers— covering network, transport, and value-added services. Thus, the legal and contractual relationships between customers and providers as well as technological choices of protocols, mechanisms, and parameters define the area of interest here.

(Journal Article) Accounting for resource and service usage in communication networks forms the basis of network operators' business, and is therefore essential. Within a heterogeneous, multidomain mobile environment of emerging new access technologies, the demand for a distributed accounting infrastructure becomes more relevant. Driven by the analysis of current accounting solutions in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) networks, the newly developed approach presents an integrated accounting architecture based on the Diameter protocol, forming a flexible basis for charging UMTS and WLAN communication services. The system developed is described, discussed and evaluated by a prototypical implementation.

(Master's Thesis) Starting in the eighties, increasing dynamics can be recognized in the international competition. The international service trade sector, to which also the banks belong, ex- perienced an enormous growth. Which meaning does this international adjustment have for the software in such enterprises? UBS Global WM&BB follows a compoment based approach in software development for several years. By now, IT solutions are deployed internationally which brings in some issues concerning different cultures and languages. The topic of this work is the analysis of possible strategies in UBS Global WM&BB to handle such internationalisation issues. It starts with an introduction into the topic which is followed by a description of the current situation. The result is a concept, based on internal documents and requirements specified by developers. A prototype is used to validate the findings.

(Conference or Workshop Paper) The adoption of the Internet Protocol (IP) by a number of non-IP network operators, such as telecom or cable TV operators, opens the path toward new business models. IP will allow operators to provide a unified wired as well as wireless access to a wide range of services to their users. Additionally, using the same communication protocols and standard interfaces, enables different providers to coordinate any type of resources in virtual organizations (VO) and supports the composition of services aggregated across multiple domains. On one hand, such an open environment requires new business models to be adopted by the involved parties. On the other hand, grid middleware infrastructure supporting integrated accounting, charging, pricing, and billing across multiple domains has to be in place to facilitate service provisioning in multiple VOs. Based on the relevant set of requirements derived, a new and extended A4C Architecture (Authentication, Authorization, Accounting, Auditing, Charging) has been developed, implemented, and evaluated for mobile grids providing pervasive access to knowledge.
