The present bachelor thesis examines the field of workplace bullying and health effects. It is the aim of this paper to specify the documented health effects across literature, caused by workplace bullying. Furthermore, recommendations on how to deal with bullying in the workplace are presented. The method used in this thesis is a literature review on existing literature on the relationship between bullying and health effects, and literature on prevention and intervention of this phenomenon. Evidence shows that bullying has a detrimental effect on well being and health of the target. Most reported health effects including psychological and physical effects were illustrated. This thesis also tries to give a possible theoretical explanation on how bullying may influence health effects. Further research is needed on the factors influencing the relationship between bullying and health effects as well as factors influencing perception and coping strategy with bullying behaviours.

Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht den Zusammenhang zwischen dem Arbeitsgestaltungsmerk-mal Aufgabenvielfalt und den Arbeitseinstellungen Arbeitszufriedenheit, affektives Commit-ment bzw. Kündigungsabsicht. Zudem werden die potentiellen Moderatoren Sinnhaftigkeit, Autonomie und Mitsprache analysiert, welche möglicherweise einen Einfluss auf die Bezie-hung zwischen Aufgabenvielfalt und Arbeitszufriedenheit, affektivem Commitment bzw. Kün-digungsabsicht aufweisen. Basierend auf theoretischer Literatur und bestehenden empirischen Studien wurden entsprechende Hypothesen aufgestellt und mithilfe von Daten des Schweizer Human-Relations-Barometers 2012 statistisch auf ihre Gültigkeit geprüft. Gemäss den empiri-schen Resultaten hat Aufgabenvielfalt einen signifikanten positiven Einfluss auf die Arbeitszu-friedenheit als auch auf das affektive Commitment, während sie einen signifikanten negativen Einfluss auf die Kündigungsabsicht zeigt. Des Weiteren konnte anhand der empirischen Ana-lyse weder für Sinnhaftigkeit noch für Autonomie und Mitsprache statistische Evidenz für einen moderierenden Effekt auf die direkten Beziehungen gefunden werden.

Workplace bullying is becoming an increasingly popular topic in research (see Branch, Ramsay & Barker, 2013) and the media (e.g., Time, Belsky, 2013; and Wall Street Journal, Silverman, 2013), perhaps reflecting public awareness of bullying as both prevalent and problematic. A specific area of employment in which bullying has been consistently documented, manifesting in various forms and across positional hierarchies, is higher education. A specific resource outlining research and practical information, issues, and interventions relevant to bullying in higher education is Workplace Bullying in Higher Education (2013), edited by Jamie Lester, PhD, Associate Professor of Higher Education at George Mason University.

This study examined links between eating behaviors, weight-based victimization (WBV) and preferences for bullying intervention among adolescents. Adolescents enrolled in weight loss camps participated in an online survey (N = 361). Regression models examined relationships between key variables. Almost half of adolescents who experienced WBV engaged in unhealthy eating behaviors, which corresponded to less desire for supportive intervention. Unhealthy eating behaviors may offset adaptive coping strategies to deal with WBV, such as support from peers and family.

This master thesis examines the relationship between HRM practices and trust in leadership. In doing so, trust is separated into two different levels of analysis. On the one hand, trust in the direct supervisor and on the other hand, trust in the organization is examined. The HRM practices used to test the relationship are job design, performance-appraisal, participation, self-determination and flexible working. Additionally, the effect of an aggregated HRM practices bundle is examined as well as the different relationships between the individual HRM practices and trust in the direct supervisor and trust in the organization. The moderating effect of culture was also part of the examinations of this master thesis. The analysis is based on the data derived from the Human Relations Barometer 2011 and the follow-up questionnaire 2012 which is a joint-project of the University of Zurich and the ETH. The sample resulted in a number of 893.

The present master thesis examines the relation between workload, well-being, and deviant workplace behavior (DWB). Through broad literature research and based on the assumptions from the Stressor – Emotion Model, the Job Demands – Resources (JDR-) Model, Coping Theory, and Spiral Theory, a theoretical framework relating those three topics has been de-veloped. In order to test the empirical validity of this theoretical framework, data from the Swiss Human Relations Barometer (HR-Barometer) of 2012 was used. The HR-Barometer is a joint research project of the University of Zurich (UZH) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) of Zurich among 1450 employees employed in Switzerland. Multiple line-ar regression analysis as well as mediation regression analysis was used to test the theoretical-ly derived hypotheses.

Die vorliegende empirische Arbeit befasst sich mit den Motiven, Merkmalen und Implikatio-nen der sogenannten „Generation Facebook“, auch Millenials oder Generation Y genannt, in Bezug auf ihr potentielles Engagement, d.h. Freiwilligenarbeit in privaten Nonprofit-Organisationen (NPOs). Anhand einer Literaturrecherche und aktuellen Studien wird aufgezeigt, dass sich die Genera-tion Facebook in ihren Eigenschaften, Wünschen und Erwartungen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt und insbesondere im Hinblick auf ein Engagement in NPOs von den bisherigen Generationen teilweise stark unterscheidt. Mithilfe von narrativen Interviews mit dem Schweizerischen Ro-ten Kreuz Kanton Zürich und dem Turnverein Rüti (bzw. dem Zürcher Kantonalverband für Sport) wird gezeigt, dass diese veränderten Einstellungen zum Leben und zur Arbeit der Ge-neration Facebook bisherige Risiken in den untersuchten NPOs verstärken, aber auch in neu-en, zum Teil noch nicht aktiv genutzten Chancen resultieren – insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Kadergewinnung. Die Resultate zeigen insbesondere, dass die aus dem Bedürfnis der Selbstverwirklichung ab-zuleitenden Faktoren für die Rekrutierung und das Mitarbeitermanagement freiwilliger Hel-fer, im Speziellen aber für die Kadergewinnung eine Chance darstellen, jedoch bisher von den untersuchten Organisationen (noch) nicht aktiv genutzt werden. Das Bedürfniss nach Selbst-verwirklichung wird von sozialen Medien in gewissen Aspekten unterstützt und von den un-tersuchten NPOs bewusst genutzt. Es zeigt sich auch, dass im Umgang mit dem Bedürfnis nach Flexibilität der Generation Facebook Organisationsstrukturen angepasst werden müssen und starke emotionale Bindungen zur Organisation von grosser Bedeutung sind – insbesonde-re im Hinblick auf die Kadergewinnung.
