Abstract Text This thesis was written between September 2006 and March 2007 as a diploma thesis at the Database Technology Group, which is part of the department of informatics at the University of Zurich. The aim on one hand was to show what Semantic Web technologies are and how they can be used to administrate metadata. On the other hand the mission was to build a standalone software application that integrates into the existing metadata management system of Helsana Versicherungen AG and provides additional flexibility and functionality to the system. The thesis is divided into three parts: After a short introduction, the first part describes terms and technologies related to the Semantic Web and metadata management. The second part covers the planning, implementation and evaluation of the software application that was built, and the third part contains an overview of the work that was done as well as an outlook to possible further development.
Zusammenfassung Diese Arbeit entstand zwischen September 2006 und März 2007 als Diplomarbeit im Bereich der Datenbank Technologie Gruppe, welche Teil des Instituts für Informatik der Universität Zürich ist. Das Ziel war einerseits zu zeigen was Technologien des “Semantic Web” sind und wie diese eingesetzt werden könnnen um Metadaten zu verwalten. Andererseits bestand der Auftrag darin, eine Software Applikation zu erstellen, welche in das bestehende Metadaten Verwaltungssystem der Helsana Versicherungen AG integriert ist und das Systems flexibler macht sowie einige zusätzliche Funktionen einbringt. Die Arbeit ist in drei Teile gegliedert: Im ersten werden nach einer kurzen Einführung Technologien und Ausdrücke, die im Zusammenhang mit dem “Semantic Web” und der Metadatenverwaltung auftreten, erklärt. Der zweite Teil behandelt die Vorgehensweise, die Implementierung und die Evaluation der erstellten Software und der dritte Teil beinhaltet einen Überblick über die geleistete Arbeit sowie einen Ausblick auf mögliche weitere Entwicklungen.
