Abstract Text The regional accumulation of blockchain startups around the world contrasts with the decentralized concept of blockchain technology. The question arises as to why blockchain startups are concentrated regionally, given that technological change is making virtual, social interactions and forms of work increasingly important. Therefore, there must be site-specific resources at the locations of blockchain startup concentrations, which make them attractive for blockchain startups. Since the literature does not yet contain comprehensive analyses of the individual blockchain startup concentrations, the aim of this study is therefore to examine the blockchain startup concentrations for similarities and differences by means of a comparative analysis of the blockchain startup concentrations, in order to draw conclusions, as to how these similarities and differences can be explained. Since there is no uniform consensus in literature on the definition of blockchain startup concentrations, in a first step blockchain startup concentrations were compared with related concepts of economical geography, in order to arrive at a suitable definition. In a further step a suitable framework was derived, which served as a basis for the qualitative comparative analysis. Next, the blockchain startup concentrations were identified and the three largest blockchain startup concentrations in Singapore, London and New York were used as objects of investigation for the comparative analysis. In a final step, the three locations were examined for their similarities and differences using a qualitative data analysis software and the reasons for the similarities and differences were discussed. It turned out that the locations have many similarities, which are conducive to the foundation and establishment of blockchain startups and this is also an important factor for these similarities. Differences between blockchain startup concentrations could hardly be found in Singapore, London and New York, suggesting that the advantages of the similarities outweigh the disadvantages and are important factors in the creation and economic growth of blockchain startup concentrations.
Zusammenfassung Die regionale Ansammlung von Blockchain-Startups auf der Welt steht im Kontrast zum dezentralen Konzept der Blockchain-Technologie. Es stellt sich die Frage, warum sich Blockchain-Startups regional konzentrieren, da doch durch den technologischen Wandel virtuelle, soziale Interaktionen und Arbeitsformen zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnen. Es müssen sich deshalb an den Standorten der Blockchain-Startup-Konzentrationen ortsspezifische Ressourcen befinden, welche sie attraktiv für Blockchain-Startups machen. Da in der Literatur noch keine umfassenden Analysen zu den einzelnen Blockchain-Startup-Konzentrationen vorliegen, hat diese Arbeit deshalb das Ziel, durch eine vergleichende Analyse der Blockchain-Startup-Konzentrationen, diese auf Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede hin zu untersuchen, um im Anschluss Rückschlüsse darüber ziehen zu können, wie sich diese Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede erklären lassen. Da in der Literatur kein einheitlicher Konsens über die Definition von Blockchain-Startup-Konzentrationen vorliegt, wurden in einem ersten Schritt Blockchain-Startup-Konzentrationen verwandten Konzepten der Wirtschaftsgeographie gegenübergestellt, um zu einer geeigneten Definition zu kommen. In einem weiteren Schritt wurde ein passendes Rahmenwerk hergeleitet, welches als Grundlage für die qualitative Vergleichsanalyse diente. Als nächstes wurden die Blockchain-Startup-Konzentrationen identifiziert und die drei grössten Blockchain-Startup-Konzentrationen in Singapur, London und New York als Untersuchungsobjekte für die vergleichende Analyse herangezogen. In einem letzten Schritt wurden die drei Standorte mit Hilfe einer Software zur qualitativen Datenanalyse hinsichtlich ihrer Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede untersucht und der Grund für die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede erörtert. Es zeigte sich, dass die Standorte viele Gemeinsamkeiten aufweisen, welche förderlich für die Gründung und die Etablierung von Blockchain-Startups sind und dies auch ein wichtiger Faktor für diese Gemeinsamkeiten darstellt. Unterschiede zwischen den Blockchain-Startup-Konzentrationen konnten sich in Singapur, London und New York kaum finden, woraus sich schliessen lässt, dass die Vorteile der Gemeinsamkeiten überwiegen und wichtige Faktoren in der Entstehung und dem wirtschaftlichen Wachstum von Blockchain-Startup-Konzentrationen darstellen.
