Conrad Meyer, O Bischoff, Langfristige Aufträge nach Swiss GAAP FER: eine konzeptionelle Analyse, Der Schweizer Treuhänder, Vol. 83 (3), 2009. (Journal Article)

Januar 2009 in Kraft.

J A Pfister, Managing organizational culture for effective internal control: from practice to theory, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Dissertation)
In times of economic and financial crises, the content of this book rings true. While we often look at formal compliance procedures, incentive systems and other ‘technical’ ways to ensure effective internal control, this study emphasizes a different perspective: How do the management principles and practices influence organizational culture in order to enhance control effectiveness? New theory is provided on the way that tone at the top – leadership, sustainability, accountability, and other social control aspects – is combined with formal control. The research is based on in-depth interviews with senior-level people (e.g. executives, managers, auditors) from more than 18 renowned U.S. and Swiss companies, and theory from fields of sociology and social psychology. In contrast to contemporary accounting and control research, where culture provides a context for control, here any control mechanism can in turn influence culture. The study offers innovative insights for both academics and practitioners including:
a) a new research framework for analyzing the links between culture and control;
b) statements from senior-level people of eBay, Google, Hewlett Packard, Intel, Levi Strauss & Co., Microsoft, Motorola, Novartis and many more;
c) a practice-oriented tool to proactively mitigate typical roots of internal control failures;
d) integrated theory on social systems, personal and organizational values and organizational corruption;
e) a foreword from Solomon N. Darwin, University of California at Berkeley. |

Methoden in der Betriebswirtschaftslehre, Edited by: Andreas Scherer, I M Kaufmann, Moritz Patzer, Gabler Edition Wissenschaft, Wiesbaden, 2009. (Edited Scientific Work)

I Wrase, Mitarbeitermotivation im Outsourcing unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Facility Managements, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Dissertation)

David Seidl, Productive misunderstandings between organisation science and organisation practice: the science-practice relation from the perspective of Niklas Luhmann’s theory of autopoietic systems, In: Autopoiesis in Organization Theory and Practice, Emerald Group Publishing Limited, Amsterdam, p. 133 - 148, 2009. (Book Chapter)
Many recent studies have voiced the growing concern that the body of knowledge that springs from organisation science is hardly taken notice of in management practice. In most of the existing literature one can identify three main reasons for the observable lack of connection between organisation research and practice: research is not sufficiently focused on the ‘real’ problems of practitioners, research results are not properly disseminated to practitioners and the language of science is not properly translated into the language practitioners use. The underlying assumption is that if scientists redressed these shortcomings their findings would be utilised by practitioners and thus the gap between theory and practice would be bridged. The aim of this chapter is to contrast this recent debate on the relation between science and practice with an analysis from the perspective of Niklas Luhmann’s theory of autopoietic systems. According to this perspective, the lack of any transfer of scientific knowledge to practice needs to be understood as the inevitable result of the differentiation between organisation science and the so-called ‘management practice’, which function according to different logics. This impedes the transfer of knowledge from the field of science to that of practice. Hence, from this perspective the practical irrelevance of management science is not a problem that can be resolved. On the contrary, only because of this differentiation, and thus, the impossibility of any direct transfer of meaning, can science be as productive as it is. The idea of organisation studies as an ‘applied science’ is a mere illusion. |

Helmut Max Dietl, M Lang, M Lutzenberger, RFID-based entry into the German B2B parcel market and its effect on competitive strategies, prices and market shares: The case of red parcel post, Journal of Strategic Management Education, Vol. 5 (3-4), 2009. (Journal Article)
This paper analyzes the market entry of Red Parcel Post, a new player in the German Business-to-Business (B2B) parcel market. Currently there are four large service providers in the German B2B parcel market. Each of these incumbent providers operates - albeit with varying degrees of automation - with a classical multi-hub-and-spoke network. Red Parcel Post plans to enter the B2B parcel market with a completely new parcel delivery system for the delivery of B2B parcels throughout Germany based on a new transport network design, and RFID- and GPS-based operations. Such operations shall enable the entrant to offer new services to potential customers and realize lower costs and prices than the established firms. We describe the market and contrast the incumbents' and the entrant's business strategies. Moreover, we develop a model to analyze the effect of the entrant's market entry on competitive strategies, market shares, prices, costs and profits.
First, we solve the game-theoretic model analytically to derive qualitative results. In a second step, we simulate market entry and competition by calibrating the model with data from the German B2B market illustrating the impact of market entry in various scenarios. |
