Daniel Rohner, Analyse der Performance-Treiber von Schweizer Pensionskassen, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2023. (Bachelor's Thesis)

Marc Matthias Denzler, Forecasting in Cryptocurrencies Markets using Machine Learning, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2023. (Master's Thesis)
In 2008, Nakamoto (2008) published his white paper on a peer-to-peer electronic cash system called
Bitcoin (BTC). Until then, online payments relied mostly on intermediaries that served as trusted
parties. By using the consensus mechanism proof-of-work, he solved the so-called double spending
problem, the possibility of spending digital money twice if there is no intermediary checking all
transactions for their validity. Bitcoin uses cryptographic techniques to bundle transactions into
blocks, and then links blocks together into one chain called blockchain. The blockchain serves as a
transaction log and an ultimate authority regarding the ownership of Bitcoins.
Since then, many cryptocurrencies have emerged, some of which turned out to be a scam. The
exchange of coins or tokens can be done directly between two parties or facilitated through a centralized
exchange. Large exchanges for various cryptocurrencies have emerged in the last few years
due to the increasing popularity of cryptocurrencies. While the market cap of all cryptocurrencies
was around $10 million at the beginning of 2011, it has ballooned to around $2 trillion by March
2022, and then declined again to around $860 billion by November 2022. Equally, academic interest
in crypto markets has increased tremendously over the past years.
As crypto markets mature, more attention was and will be paid to them from regulators (e.g.
European Commission (2020)) and institutional investors. There is a vast amount of high-quality
research about cryptocurrencies available and ongoing, mainly from a technical point of view. From a finance perspective, despite the growing interest, there is still a lack of knowledge about the structure
and behavior, and the predictability of cryptocurrencies markets.
To add to the sparse literature, this thesis investigates the predictability of Bitcoin prices over
various time intervals. Using long short-term memory networks (LSTM), a type of recurrent neural
network (RNN), binary forecasts are made about the development of Bitcoin prices. That is, using
historical data, predictions are made whether the price of Bitcoin will increase or decrease.
A unique and proprietary dataset provided by the company “Entropy Research” lays the foundation
for the analysis. The dataset ranges from 1 July 2021 to 28 March 2022 and contains every trade
during that period and periodic limit order book snapshots with a depth of 10 per side. The data is
cleaned and aggregated into time intervals of 1 second, 1 minute, and 5 minutes. Various features are
created based on the original and the aggregated data. Then, for all newly created datasets, multiple
recurrent neural networks with different parameter specifications are trained and evaluated.
Although some models show a higher test accuracy than the benchmark value, the differences are
very small and inconsistent. Furthermore, the models predict mostly, sometimes exclusively, one of
the two classes. Additionally, the models are highly sensitive to even small changes in the parameter
values, indicating that the data contain no strong signals.
Based on promising results presented in section 1.2, the datasets could be enhanced with networkbased
data, that is, data regarding information about the Bitcoin blockchain, or with data regarding
Bitcoin’s investor attractiveness, or other features. Furthermore, a more systematic approach could be
used to find a suitable network architecture, for example a grid search. This is, however, somewhat
complicated by the long training times of some of the networks, especially when using short time
intervals. |

Sophia Gläser, Carbon Tax Uncertainty Evidence from the Implied Volatility Surface, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2023. (Master's Thesis)
Climate policy uncertainty makes it difficult for investors to assess the impact of future climate
regulations. This thesis investigates how uncertainty about carbon taxation is priced in the option
market. The results show that the cost of protection against downside and jump risk is higher for
firms with high carbon intensity, and firms that do not report carbon emissions. The value of option
protection increases when attention to carbon taxation is high. |

Nemanja Simic, Momentumeffekt bei Währungen, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2023. (Bachelor's Thesis)

Carole Mäder, ESG-Ratings bei Emerging-Markets-Anlagen aus Anlegersicht, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2023. (Master's Thesis)
Size-Premium. |

Fabio Pandolfo, Kann mit einer ESG-Trend Strategie eine Outperformance erlangt werden?, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Master's Thesis)

Adrian Schmidli, Empirische Analyse des Momentum-Effekts in Aktienmärkten, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Bachelor's Thesis)

Thierry Bessire, The Mispricing in the Structured Products Market - An Empirical Analysis for Switzerland, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Master's Thesis)
Based on last best bid prices this thesis examines the fairness of quoted prices in the secondary market
for Swiss structured products. The theoretical fair price is derived from a model price replicating the
payoff structure of the analysed structured product. Most of the analysed product types are observed
to be priced with an implicit premium. Competition among issuers, time to maturity, complexity of
the product and the underlying type are found to impact the degree of mispricing on the secondary
market for structured products in Switzerland. |

Jean-Luc Scheiber, Overnight Anomaly in the Swiss Bond Market, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Bachelor's Thesis)
This paper uses secondary market quotes of bonds part of the Swiss Bond Index in order to study bond intraday (open to close) and overnight (close to open) returns. The study shows that overnight returns over the last decade were positive in almost all cases and a lot more robust to common market factors than intraday returns. This overnight effect also holds for most sectors, maturities and ratings. |

Christian Laely, ESG Certification as a Value Driver for Companies on the Swiss Stock Exchange, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Master's Thesis)
This thesis analyzes ESG-certified SPI companies’ stock performance on a portfolio level and stock
level, operating profitability, and WACC from 2016-2021. The companies were analyzed, controlling
for systemic risk factors and other performance factors. The panel-data regressions were conducted
both with OLS and fixed effects to control for unobserved heterogeneity. No significant impact of the
ESG rating on the stock performance was found. Furthermore, the results showed a slightly negative
effect on the operating profitability and no apparent effect on the WACC. However, methodological
concerns and the short sampling period make it difficult to draw a causal link. |

Elliot Beck, Gianluca De Nard, Michael Wolf, Improved Inference in Financial Factor Models, In: SSRN, No. 4107472, 2022. (Working Paper)
Conditional heteroskedasticity of the error terms is a common occurrence in financial factor models, such as the CAPM and Fama-French factor models, This feature necessitates the use of heteroskedasticity consistent (HC) standard errors to make valid inference for regression coefficients. In this paper, we show that using weighted least squares (WLS) or adaptive least squares (ALS) to estimate model parameters generally leads to smaller HC standard errors compared to ordinary least squares (OLS), which translates into improved inference in the form of shorter confidence intervals and more powerful hypothesis tests. In an extensive empirical analysis based on historical stock returns and commonly used factors, we find that conditional heteroskedasticity is pronounced and that WLS and ALS can dramatically shorten confidence intervals compared to OLS, especially during times of financial turmoil. |

Nicolas Schaffner, Reinforcement Learning for Optimal Trading Rule Selection, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Master's Thesis)
With the rise of machine learning and artificial intelligence, new methods and resources for
improving investment performance emerged and quickly gained popularity, owing to various
benefits over human traders. In this thesis, two reinforcement learning agents are introduced to
trade the S&P 500 E-Mini and the 10-Year US Treasury Notes futures contracts. The agents
are trained and tested on 11 years of intraday data with added technical indicators. The agents’
performance is compared to a long-only benchmark. Our findings show that our agents did not
outperform the benchmark and that they were unable to complete one testing session without
overspending. |

Silvan Kuprecht, Pecking Order Theorie vs. Trade-off Theorie , University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Bachelor's Thesis)

Gianluca De Nard, Oops! I Shrunk the Sample Covariance Matrix Again: Blockbuster Meets Shrinkage, Journal of Financial Econometrics, Vol. 20 (4), 2022. (Journal Article)
Existing shrinkage techniques struggle to model the covariance matrix of asset returns in the presence of multiple-asset classes. Therefore, we introduce a Blockbuster shrinkage estimator that clusters the covariance matrix accordingly. Besides the definition and derivation of a new asymptotically optimal linear shrinkage estimator, we propose an adaptive Blockbuster algorithm that clusters the covariance matrix even if the (number of) asset classes are unknown and change over time. It displays superior all-around performance on historical data against a variety of state-of-the-art linear shrinkage competitors. Additionally, we find that for small- and medium-sized investment universes the proposed estimator outperforms even recent nonlinear shrinkage techniques. Hence, this new estimator can be used to deliver more efficient portfolio selection and detection of anomalies in the cross-section of asset returns. Furthermore, due to the general structure of the proposed Blockbuster shrinkage estimator, the application is not restricted to financial problems. |

Lukas Sallemi, Influence of Futures-Positioning on Bond Returns: An ARIMAX forecasting model on COT data, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Bachelor's Thesis)
The research conducted in this thesis aims to investigate whether positioning data contained
in the CFTC report of the two main investor groups, institutionals and retailers,
reflects predictive power for future returns in the U.S. financial securities market. For
tracking the positions and price evolution over di↵erent time horizons, multiple ARIMAX
forecasting models were built. Those models were tested for statistical significancy and
then implemented with the price as exogeneous variable and the long and short positions
of the two investor groups as dependent variables, resulting in one-year forecasting plots.
Even though some patterns are spotted, these one-factor models are not able to efficiently
forecast future price movements, mainly due to the time lag between the publication date
and the collecting of the data of the CFTC report, and the aggregate composition of
the COT data. A possible way to solve these issues is to build a multi-factor model, as
done by “Micaletti (2018)” in his paper “Want Smart Beta? Follow the Smart Money:
Market and Factor Timing Using Relative Sentiment”. The study of this thesis adds to
the current literature more empirical evidence on the statistical significance of trading
using institutionals positioning data, confirming that, by its own, the forecasting power
is relatively low. |

Rafael Silvestri, ANLAGESTRATEGIEN BASIEREND AUF DER GOOGLE-SUCHHÄUFIGKEIT VON UNTERNEHMEN IM SCHWEIZER MARKT, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Bachelor's Thesis)

Min Yang, Recognizing Technical Patterns with Images, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Master's Thesis)
We reconsider the technical analysis using the image recognition method, exploring asset price behavior
after some popular technical patterns. Comparing the results from the image recognition model
to the rule-based method with time series, we find that the image recognition model can detect much
more patterns than the rule-based one. In the event study, we show there are significant cumulative
abnormal returns after most of these technical patterns with various holding periods. We construct
a portfolio based on these patterns and show this trading strategy can achieve significant excess
returns and high Sharpe ratio. This result is robust and cannot be captured by the Fama-French
factors. |

Aurelia Graziella Bühlmann, Sustainable Investing in Retail Banking: Shrinking the Gap between Customers’ Demand and Banks’ Offerings , University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Master's Thesis)
The Paris agreement and the UN SDGs show the importance and necessity of sustainability. The financial sector must take its responsibility and contribute to the transition towards a sustainable economy. By interviewing Swiss retail banks and making a survey among university students, a potential gap in the sustainable investing offering and demand shall be identified. Such a gap exists and is due to the challenges which come hand in hand with the beginning of the transition to a sustainable economy. Expanding the group of survey participants and the number of retail banks interviewed would lead to more significance. |

Dave Kälin, CO2-Zertifikate: Eine neue Anlagemöglichkeit für Schweizer Anleger/-innen und Pensionskassen?, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2022. (Bachelor's Thesis)
