We study high-frequency exchange rates over the period 1993--2008. Based on the recent literature on volatility and liquidity risk premia, we use a factor model to capture linear and non-linear linkages between currencies, stock and bond markets as well as proxies for market volatility and liquidity. We document that the Swiss franc and Japanese yen appreciate against the US dollar when US stock prices decrease and US bond prices and FX volatility increase. These safe haven properties materialise over different time granularities (from a few hours to several days) and non-linearly with the volatility factor and during crises. The latter effects were particularly discernible for the yen during the recent financial crisis. Copyright 2010, Oxford University Press. |

P Knab, Martin Pinzger, H C Gall, Visual patterns in issue tracking data, In: International Conference on Software Process, 2010-07-08. (Conference or Workshop Paper published in Proceedings)
Software development teams gather valuable data about features and bugs in issue tracking systems. This information can be used to measure and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the development process. In this paper we present an approach that harnesses the extraordinary capability of the human brain to detect visual patterns. We specify generic visual process patterns that can be found in issue tracking data. With these patterns we can analyze information about effort estimation, and the length, and sequence of problem resolution activities. In an industrial case study we apply our interactive tool to identify instances of these patterns and discuss our observations. Our approach was validated through extensive discussions with multiple project managers and developers, as well as feedback from the project review board. |

Prashant Goswami, P Schlegel, B Solenthaler, Renato Pajarola, Interactive SPH simulation and rendering on the GPU, In: ACM SIGGRAPH / Eurographics Symposium on Computer Animation (SCA), 2010-07-02. (Conference or Workshop Paper published in Proceedings)
In this paper we introduce a novel parallel and interactive SPH simulation and rendering method on the GPU using CUDA which allows for high quality visualization. The crucial particle neighborhood search is based on Z-indexing and parallel sorting which eliminates GPU memory overhead due to grid or hierarchical data structures. Furthermore, it overcomes limitations imposed by shading languages allowing it to be very flexible and approaching the practical limits of modern graphics hardware. For visualizing the SPH simulation we introduce a new rendering pipeline. In the first step, all surface particles are efficiently extracted from the SPH particle cloud exploiting the simulation data. Subsequently, a partial and therefore fast distance field volume is rasterized from the surface particles. In the last step, the distance field volume is directly rendered using state-of-the-art GPU raycasting. This rendering pipeline allows for high quality visualization at very high frame rates. |

Eryk Jerzy Schiller, New interconnection architectures for wireless networks, University of Grenoble, École doctorale Mathématiques, Sciences et Technologies de l'Information, Informatique (MSTII), 2010. (Dissertation)
In this thesis, we investigate new aspects of addressing and routing in Spontaneous Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN). Spontaneous wireless mesh networks promise a completely different architecture of the future Internet in comparison with its current state, but there are still many problems that have to be solved prior to the WMNs deployment. For example, routing in small static networks is easy. However, most real wireless networks are dynamic; links may go up and down, nodes join or leave the network and the WMN size may grow, which implies the problem of large routing tables. New kinds of spontaneous networks amplify this trend, they include thousands of nodes acting as routers. Several experimentations reported on scaling problems of topological routing protocols such as AODV, DSDV, DSR or OLSR. Classical routing algorithms should be replaced with suitable technologies that guarantee good scalability and offer robust connectivity. We have considered geographical routing algorithms, because they do not require complete knowledge of the global network topology to compute routes and thus they are much more scalable than topological algorithms. There are, however, many problems we need to solve. The most important one is that geographical algorithms suffer from poor performance. They can compute much longer paths than topological routing algorithms. In order to solve this problem, we first studied the behavior of the greedy geographical forwarding, the basic building block of geographical algorithms. Then, we designed two new routing protocols: Binary Waypoint Routing and Scalable Waypoint Routing. Our protocols do not require any additional overhead to discover the network topology, but instead they passively analyze the traffic to learn efficient routes. We gather pure geographical information that helps to forward packets. Our method of packet forwarding follows the topological properties of the network and in consequence improve the performance of geographical routing algorithms. |
