Der Ausbruch der Coronapandemie im März 2020 stellte die Schweizer Wirtschaft sowie den Finanzplatz Schweiz vor eine grosse Herausforderung. Die Schweizerische Nationalbank (SNB) reagierte innert kürzester Zeit in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Bund, der Schweizerischen Bankiervereinigung sowie den Banken auf die neuen Gegebenheiten. In dieser Arbeit wird aufgezeigt, wie sich das Engagement der SNB in den Bereichen der Offenmarktoperationen, der stehenden Fazilitäten sowie der Devisengeschäfte auswirkte und welche Auswirkungen die expansive Gelpolitik, insbesondere der Negativzins, als Reaktion auf die Pandemiebekämpfung hatte. Des Weiteren erfolgen eine Betrachtung der Zusammensetzung des Schweizer Bankensektors und eine Analyse seiner Rolle während des ersten Jahres der Pandemie. Um die Auswirkungen auf den Bankensektor zu erörtern, werden die Folgen der geldpolitischen Massnahmen sowie die Chancen und Risiken der Banken aufgezeigt. Hierfür werden die UBS, die Credit Suisse, die Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB) und die Basler Kantonalbank (BKB) miteinander verglichen. Für den Einsatz der geldpolitischen Instrumente der SNB wurden, sofern möglich, Dokumente und Daten der SNB verwendet, während zum Vergleich der Banken eine Datenerhebung aus den Geschäftsberichten im Zeitraum von 2014 bis 2021 durchgeführt wurde. Für diese Arbeit wurden Daten und Veränderungen der wirtschaftlichen und geldpolitischen Lage bis zum 01.06.2022 berücksichtigt. Die geldpolitische Reaktion führte zu einer Verlängerung der Bilanz der SNB. Darüber hinaus wird mit einer baldigen Erhöhung des Leitzinses aufgrund der vorherrschenden Inflation in der Schweiz und ihrer Handelspartner gerechnet. Durch den Vergleich der Banken, die Folgen sowie Chancen und Risiken ist ersichtlich, dass die Coronapandemie den Bankensektor Schweiz nicht negativ beeinflusste.

Vorliegende Arbeit leistet einen Beitrag zur Untersuchung der operativen als auch strategischen Bedeutung, die hiesige FinTechs und BigTechs auf das Schweizer Retailbanking haben. Hierfür sind zunächst durch eine Zeitreihen- und Korrelationsanalyse wichtige Erfolgsrechnungskennzahlen Schweizer Retailbanken in Relation zu Marktpräsenzindikatoren von Finund BigTechs gebracht worden. Anschliessend folgte eine qualitative Analyse mithilfe von Informationen zur geschäftlichen Verflechtung von Fin-/BigTechs und Banken in der Praxis. Damit wurde die Untersuchung eines kausalen Zusammenhangs der vorab erhaltenen Korrelationen möglich. Als numerische Datengrundlage dienten die Finanzberichte der Retailbanken, die FinTech Study Reports vom Institut für Finanzdienstleistungen Zug und die Swiss Payment Monitor Reports. Die qualitativen Daten stammen aus der Durchführung von Interviews mit Vertretern grosser Schweizer Retailbanken. Ertragsseitige Kennzahlen entwickelten sich bei allen untersuchten Banken positiv mit den Tech-Indikatoren, während bei den Kantonalbanken höhere Tech-Präsenz im Markt mit niedrigeren Aufwänden und bei Grossbanken wie der Credit Suisse, UBS oder der Raiffeisen Gruppe damit höhere Aufwände assoziiert waren. Direkt kausale Zusammenhänge konnten Übereinstimmung dieser Korrelationen nur über die grossen Bankensoftware-Anbieter wie zum Beispiel Avaloq oder Finnova nachgewiesen werden. Unter Ausschluss dieser IT-Partner bestehen aber keine direkten Effekte von Fin- und BigTechs auf das operative Retailbankengeschäft. Grund dafür sind die auf die traditionellen Bankensoftwarespezialisten ausgerichteten Kernbankensysteme, die eine Integration von IT-Lösungen Dritter schwer realisierbar machen. Ein Transfer zwischen Retailbanken und FinTech(-StartUps) existiert somit nicht, sondern bedingt zuerst den Umbau der Kernbankensysteme in modulare Architekturen. Finund BigTechs

im Rahmen des Kleinbankenregimes die kleinen Geldhäuser unterstützen und die Vielfalt im Schweizer Finanzplatz sichern. Um diese Forschungsfrage zu beantworten, wird als erstes anhand eines Bewertungsrahmens für differenzierte Regulierungen eine qualitative Beurteilung vorgenommen. In dieser Analyse kommt man unter anderem zum Schluss, dass die Wettbewerbsneutralität und die Gleichbehandlung garantiert ist. Zusätzlich können negative Auswirkungen wie Fehlanreize oder eine Komplexitätssteigerung aufgrund der Proportionalität ausgeschlossen werden. In einem zweiten Schritt werden in der Kostenanalyse die Erfolgsrechnungen von 30 Banken zwei Jahre vor der Einführung des Kleinbankenregimes und zwei Jahre danach untersucht. Mit der Differenz-von-Differenz Methode wird analysiert, ob ein kausaler Zusammenhang zwischen den aufsichtsrechtlichen Erleichterungen und einer Kostensenkung besteht. Die Resultate zeigen keine statistisch signifikante Kostenreduktion für Institute des Kleinbankenregimes. Um einen Praxisbezug herzustellen, werden zusätzlich verschiedene Experten befragt. In diesen Interviews kommt man zu der Erkenntnis, dass die Massnahmen im Rahmen des Kleinbankenregimes besonders effektiv sind, wenn bei neuen Vorschriften direkt risikoorientiert reguliert wird. Dieses Untersuchungsergebnis verdeutlicht, dass die FINMA Erleichterungen für Kleinbanken nicht erst im Nachhinein gewähren sollte. Abschliessend lässt sich festhalten, dass das Kleinbankenregime die kleinen Institute unterstützt. Es ist jedoch zu bezweifeln, dass die Massnahmen ausreichen, um dem Rückgang der Kleinbanken entgegenzuwirken und somit die Vielfalt des Finanzplatzes zu sichern. Mit dieser Arbeit wird ein Beitrag zur Beurteilung der Zweckmässigkeit und der Auswirkungen der Proportionalität in der Bankenregulierung geleistet. Zusätzlich kann die Analyse als Basis für zukünftige Verbesserungen des Kleinbankenregimes verwendet werden.

This paper analyses the correlation between electoral results of green parties and corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts of a predetermined set of banks. Using sustainability- and annual reports of banks over the years 2010 to 2020 the CSR efforts are quantified. Election data is, if possible, collected from official institutions, considering the same time period. Otherwise, different sources are consulted to obtain the required information. To reach a conclusion regarding the correlation, descriptive statistics are applied to relate the banks’ CSR efforts and the green parties’ electoral performance. This paper provides evidence that the efforts banks take with regards to CSR are independent of the performance of green parties. The result suggests that the political advancement of green parties does not have a direct effect on the banks’ commitment to CSR-related topics.

Does the success of green political parties in parliament influence banks' lending behaviour? This thesis collects data on the relative green party size in 21 countries, defined as the number of seats the green party has in parliament over the total number of available seats and matches it with both firm-level and loan-level data. The data is then analysed using a regression that is based on panel data and industry-size-location-time fixed effects to control for endogeneity. The results show a significant positive correlation between green party presence in parliament and domestic bank loans. This master thesis contributes to the literature that analyses the effects of introducing more stringent climate policies and how banks react when firms experience environmental concerns

One of the concerns in the debate on climate change is whether financial flows contribute to the reduction of emissions. This presentation looks at the role bond market- and bank-based debt play in the allocation of resources to fossil fuel in the context of the risk of stranded assets. The presentation shows that banks continue to provide financing to fossil fuel firms that the bond market would not finance as long as they do not price the risk of stranded assets. In this setting, stranded assets risks may have shifted to large banks.

We analyse the recent policy decisions made by the European Central Bank and the national authorities related to capital and shareholders’ remuneration aimed at promoting banking credit supply in COVID-19-afflicted economies. We forecast the impact of the regulatory decisions based on the empirical literature and discuss the factors that reduce the banks’ incentives to expand their loan portfolios. We argue that the introduction of the dividend ban caused a surge in regulatory uncertainty and undermined banks’ market valuation raising the expected funding costs and contributing to the banks’ reluctance to make use of the capital buffers. We develop policy suggestions intended to mitigate this effect.

We analyze how individual investors respond to inflation. We introduce a unique dataset containing information on local inflation and security portfolios of more than 2,000 clients of a German bank between 1920 and 1924, covering the German hyperinflation. We find that individual investors buy less (sell more) stocks when facing higher local inflation. This effect is more pronounced for less sophisticated investors. Moreover, we document a positive relation between local inflation and forgone returns following stock sales. Our findings are consistent with individual investors suffering from money illusion. Alternative explanations such as consumption needs are unlikely to drive our results.

Abstract In dieser Arbeit wird analysiert, was eine Schattenbank ist und wie der Schattenbanksektor funktioniert. Gleichzeitig wird der aktuelle Einfluss des Schattenbanksektors auf das Schweizer Kreditgeschäft analysiert. Dieser Teil füllt die bestehende Forschungslücke aus und stellt somit einen eigenen Beitrag zum wissenschaftlichen Diskurs dar. Basierend auf theoretischen Ausführungen von früheren wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten wird zunächst der Schattenbanksektor definiert und die Handlungsweise dieses Sektors erklären. Darauffolgend werden diese Erkenntnisse dazu verwendet, um den Einfluss der Schatten-banken auf das Schweizer Kreditgeschäft zu beziffern, wobei diese approximative Messung auf Daten von unterschiedlichen institutionellen Quellen basiert. Als Ergebnis dieser Arbeit lässt sich festhalten, dass Schattenbanken Unternehmen sind, die ohne Banklizenz bankenähnliche Aufgaben ausführen. Die Finanzintermediation im Schat-tenbanksektor wird häufig erst durch eine Zusammenarbeit unterschiedlicher Akteure er-möglicht. Dabei werden unter anderem Verbriefungen und Repo-Transaktionen intensiv ge-nutzt. Gleichzeitig zeigt diese Arbeit, dass der Einfluss von Schattenbanken auf das Schwei-zer Kreditgeschäft aktuell als gering eingestuft werden kann. Die aktuelle Datenlage in Be-zug auf Schweizer Schattenbanken ist sehr spärlich, was auf ein fehlendes öffentliches Inte-resse und eine fehlende Wachsamkeit der verantwortlichen Institutionen deutet. Ein zukünftiges Wachstum des Schattenbanksektors kann in der Schweiz angenommen wer-den. Schweizer Geschäftsbanken müssen sich diesem vermehrten Konkurrenzdruck durch Schattenbanken bewusst sein und frühzeitig Gegenmassnahmen einleiten. Die Schweizer Volkswirtschaft kann durch einen grösseren Schattenbanksektor an Effizienz gewinnen, aber auch an Stabilität einbüssen. Deshalb ist eine genaue Analyse und das Treffen von abgewo-genen Regulierungsmassnahmen für die Schweizer Wirtschaftsstabilität unabdingbar.

This paper gives a brief introduction about the status of Internet finance in China and introduce the impact of Internet finance on commercial banks in terms of liquidity assets and liquidity liabilities. Then, data of 80 commercial banks in China from 2013 to 2020 were selected to empirically analyzes the association between the development of Internet finance and banks’ liquidity performance by establishing a regression model and further proofed by a panel regression model. The results show that: Internet finance has a significant positive impact on liquidity performance of commercial banks in China. The results of the robustness test indicate that the impact of Internet finance on the liquidity of small banks, such as city commercial banks and rural commercial banks, is more significant than that of state-owned banks or joint-stock banks. Compared to listed banks, non-listed banks are more likely to be affected. Overall, in the new financial ecology, deep integration of information technology and active transformation to financial technology innovation is an important strategic way for the sustainable development of traditional commercial banks.

We assess the cleansing effects of the 2008–2009 financial crisis. U.S. regions with higher levels of supervisory forbearance on distressed banks see less restructuring in the real sector: fewer establishments, firms, and jobs are lost when more distressed banks remain in business. In these regions, the banking sector has been less healthy for several years after the crisis. Regions with less forbearance experience higher productivity growth after the crisis with more firm entries, job creation, and employment, wages, patents, and output growth. Forbearance is greater for state-chartered banks and in regions with weaker banking competition and more independent banks.

This paper analyzes the reputational effects of forced CEO turnovers on outside directors. Directors interlocked to a forced CEO turnover experience large and persistent increases in withheld votes at subsequent re-elections relative to non-turnover-interlocked directors. Reputational losses are larger for turnovers with a higher potential for disrupting a firm's management, for directors favorably inclined to the CEO, and for directors with a committee-based responsibility for monitoring the CEO. Our results imply that the average forced CEO turnover signals a governance failure at the board level, and that shareholders rely on salient actions to update their beliefs about directors' hidden qualities.

This article examines the impact of the leverage ratio on bank profits using quarterly data from 2017 to 2021. As an external shock, the COVID-19 epidemic can test the ability of banks to deal with risks. Using the OLS and GMM models, this paper concludes that bank profits will increase as the leverage ratio increases, and this conclusion will not change as the COVID-19 epidemic hits. In the short term after the shock arrives, the rate at which bank profits increase with the leverage ratio will become smaller.
