Hao Li, Jinlin Li, Helmut Max Dietl, A novel decision making approach for benchmarking the service quality of smart community health centers, IEEE Access, Vol. 8, 2020. (Journal Article)
The purpose of this research is to develop a novel approach to benchmark smart community health centers in order to achieve continuous improvement of service quality. Three methods are presented: the fuzzy DEMATEL method is used to determine the criteria weights, the fuzzy ELECTRE III method is employed to obtain the ranking of smart community health centers, and IPA (Importance-Performance Analysis) is employed to formulate improvement strategies. The proposed approach clearly identifies the strengths and weakness of each smart community health center by ranking its performance with respect to a system of five service quality criteria. In addition, IPA is able to develop the most effective improvement strategies for each smart community health center. The proposed approach was applied to five smart community health centers in Beijing and service strengths and weakness are discussed. The proposed approach has three notable advantages. First, the novel approach can address ambiguity and uncertainty in the process of decision making. Second, interdependent relationships among the evaluation criteria are analyzed by the fuzzy DEMATEL method, so that the weights obtained are more in line with reality. Third, the fuzzy ELECTRE III method considers non-compensatory behavior for service quality comparisons among smart community health centers. The novel fuzzy-based approach presented in this paper is a powerful and highly effective tool to benchmark smart community health centers and develop successful improvement strategies of service quality. |

Helmut Max Dietl, Anil Özdemir, Andrew Rendall, The role of facial attractiveness in tennis TV-viewership, Sport management review, Vol. 23 (3), 2020. (Journal Article)
Social sciences, anthropology, psychology, and economics researchers have shown various effects of physical attractiveness. In this study, the authors analyze 622 live tennis matches from 66 Grand Slam tournaments between 2000 and 2016, examining the relationship between facial attractiveness, measured by tennis players’ facial symmetry, and TV-viewership. Results indicate that facial symmetry plays a positive role for female matches while there is no significant effect for male matches. The effect persists in several subsample regressions and robustness checks. The findings have important implications for managers in the field of sports. While public broadcasters have a public service function and therefore should be careful in exploiting consumer biases to avoid reinforcing non-sports taste-based discrimination types. Commercial broadcasters and media institutions with solely profit-maximizing objectives will likely exploit consumer biases. |

Helmut Max Dietl, Cornel Nesseler, Carlos Gomez Gonzalez, What's in a Name? Measuring Access to Social Activities with a Field Experiment, Palgrave Communications, Vol. 5 (160), 2019. (Journal Article)
Today’s societies increasingly consist of members who migrated from other countries and regions, and their functioning depends heavily on integrating their diverse members. Interactions with the local population through social activities enhance integration. Despite its relevance, however, previous research has largely overlooked the role of the local population in social integration. This paper introduces an objective method for analyzing access to social activities. Switzerland includes diverse native groups, who differ in culture and language, and a high percentage of foreigners. Applications were sent by email to amateur Swiss football clubs, asking if it is possible to join a training session. The applications differed only in the contact name. Individuals with foreign names, as well as individuals with Swiss names from some other native groups, received significantly fewer responses. The findings are relevant for governing institutions and policy-makers. Researchers who study social integration may find the novel method used here of considerable interest. |

Yangyang Chen, Helmut Max Dietl, Johannes Orlowski, Fang Zheng, The effect of investment into European football on the market value of Chinese corporations, International Journal of Sport Finance, Vol. 14 (4), 2019. (Journal Article)
This paper analyzes how investments in professional European football clubs affect the market value of Chinese corporations. Twelve acquisition cases with complete stock return data are identified between 2009 and 2017. Applying traditional financial event study methodology, it appears that Chinese corporations, on average, do not earn abnormal returns as a result of their investments in professional European football clubs. However, as exceptions to this finding, a few corporations show significant positive or negative abnormal returns. This study also hints at an association between the change in market value of acquiring corporations, the relative transaction size, and their industry relatedness. These findings have important implications for corporate and football managers, current stock holders, and future investors. |

Carlos Gomez Gonzalez, Helmut Max Dietl, Cornel Nesseler, Does performance justify the underrepresentation of women coaches? Evidence from professional women’s soccer, Sport Management Review, Vol. 22 (5), 2019. (Journal Article)
In this paper, the authors empirically analyze the influence of the gender of the coach on team performance in women’s soccer leagues. Moreover, the authors examine the role of initial experience of coaches (as professional players) as an attribute that converges with gender diversity and influence performance. The sample includes the top divisions in France, Germany, and Norway from 2004 to 2017. The results from the regression model show that the gender of the coach is not a significant determinant of team performance (points per game). In addition, the initial experience of coaches does not alter the results. Therefore, managerial decisions of clubs with regard to the employment of coaches should not rely on gender. |
