Abstract Text | This thesis examines the financial developments of European banks during the last crises using the Bankscope database and a Java software developed for this purpose. It is shown to be practical for analysis. The ECB implemented longer term refinancing operations to increase liquidity of banks in the Eurozone and other measures. The stability and the profitability of banks decreased extensively from 2005 to 2012. Cooperative banks performed best and savings banks worst. The Portuguese banking sector was, the least negatively affected in comparison to Spain, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Cyprus. No pattern regarding ECB measures could be found. |
