Abstract Text | Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, changed circumstances have impacted the operations of microfinance institutions around the world. Moving restrictions adversely affect small businesses and threaten the livelihood of low-income clients. The difficulty for the institutions is to ensure the continuation of their operations without risking the health of employees and clients. This thesis describes and analyses four crises the microfinance industry has faced in the past. Based on the analysis of past crises, this thesis presents internal and external factors that provide insight into the challenges microfinance institutions might face in managing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. |
