Abstract Text | Credit rating agencies (CRA) have become the most recognized partners for corporate issuers, investors and financial institutions in assessing credit risk and for determining compliance with regulatory requirements. Their ratings are widely accepted and of high importance for many institutions. That is why CRA are deeply anchored in the financial system. The aim of this thesis is to shed more light on the regulatory framework of CRA in Europe. In addition, a comparison of the two widely used credit risk measures, the CDS spreads and credit ratings of European banks, is made to evaluate whether a lower credit rating implies a higher CDS spread.
