In diesem Buch werden ausgewählte Ergebnisse zweier Studien zum Verhältnis von Mittelstand und Mitbestimmung vorgestellt. Ausgangspunkt der Fragestellung ist die Beobachtung, dass im Betriebsverfassungsrecht zwar für Unternehmen ab fünf Beschäftigten ein Betriebsrat möglich ist, ein solcher aber in der überwiegenden Zahl der betreffenden Betriebe nicht existiert. Die Gründe dafür eruiert das Buch anhand verschiedener Fragen: Welche Sichtweise und welche Einstellungen haben Mittelständler gegenüber Mitbestimmung? Was wissen sie darüber? Welche Ängste und Befürchtungen beeinflussen möglicherweise ihre Einstellung zu der Thematik? Welche alternativen Mechanismen zur Arbeitnehmerbeteiligung und zur Konfliktlösung gibt es in den einzelnen Betrieben? Welche Erfahrungen haben Mittelständler schließlich in der Auseinandersetzung oder Zusammenarbeit mit Betriebsräten in ihren Betrieben gemacht? Und wie sehen die Arbeitnehmervertreter ihrerseits die Mitbestimmung im Mittelstand?

Given the rising importance of the global media and the relative unwillingness of democratic publics to accept casualties in war, decision makers have increasingly relied on the strategic dissemination of rhetoric in order to justify military engagements. They "talk intervention", that is, they justify foreign engagements in terms of an emerging global norm that finds the international community "responsible to protect". Adversaries of interventions, in contrast, emphasize the inherent uncertainties and risks associated with such undertakings, taking advantage of the "body-bag-effect". This book identifies prevalent foreign policy frames and analyzes their impact on individual attitudes towards foreign policy decisions. It argues that framing effects can be best understood as an interaction between message content and personal traits. A case study on Germany bolsters this argument, providing experimental evidence that interventionist talking and its counter-rationale exert some influence on the formation of political preferences. It also shows that the magnitude of this influence is very much contingent on the individuals' political sophistication and prior dispositions.

Seit mehr als zehn Jahren - seit die Nachfrage nach Ausbildungsplätzen das Ausbildungsplatzangebot kontinuierlich übersteigt - ist ein wachsendes Interesse an der Ökonomie der Berufsausbildung zu verzeichnen, und es sind zahlreiche theoretische und empirische Arbeiten zu diesem Thema erschienen. Da Deutschland und die Schweiz über ein hoch entwickeltes System der Berufsausbildung verfügen, stellen sie ein ideales Feld für empirische Forschung mit einer Vielzahl von Forschungsthemen und -ansätzen dar. Dem wachsenden Interesse an Berufsbildungsökonomie trägt die Sonderausgabe der 'Zeitschrift für ArbeitsmarktForschung' Rechnung. Sie enthält ein breites Spektrum von Beiträgen zur Ökonomie der Berufsausbildung und repräsentiert damit die Forschungs-Community in beiden Ländern. Beiträge über empirische Erkenntnisse über Berufsausbildung und langfriste Wirkungen beruflicher Erstausbildung werden ergänzt durch drei Beträge zur Weiterbildung, welche das Thema abrunden.

We review two important schools within business and society research, which we label positivist and post-positivist corporate social responsibility (CSR). The former is criticized because of its instrumentalism and normative vacuity, and the latter because of its relativism, foundationalism, and utopianism. We propose a new approach, based on Jürgen Habermas's theory of democracy, and define the new role of the business firm as a political actor in a globalizing society.

The article presents an empirical analysis of the relationship between competitive balance and fan attendance in European Soccer Leagues. Seasonal average match attendance data in professional German, English, Italian and French football during the season 1963-1964 to 2005-2006 formed the basis of the empirical results. A dominating approach among researchers in measuring seasonal competitive balance is the idealized standard deviation of winning percentages and one reason for this is the measure's simplicity. Drawbacks of measuring competitive balance using the said approach has been pointed out by Michie and Oughton and this has been addressed by Cain and Haddock by proposing a different procedure.

Bei Untersuchungen zu Kostenvorteilen von MC werden meist einzelne Massnahmen isoliert betrachtet. Um aussagestarke Ergebnisse zu erhalten, braucht es Untersuchungen, bei denen die Gesamteffekte von Massnahmen den Gesamtkosten gegenübergestellt werden. Ein weiterer Aspekt mit Forschungsbedarf ist die Qualität: Verbesserte Qualitätsmessungen würden nicht nur MC zugute kommen, sondern den Wettbewerb unter allen Leistungserbringern Richtung Qualitätswettbewerb lenken.

A psychological tax contract goes beyond the traditional deterrence model and explains tax morale as a complicated interaction between taxpayers and the government. As a contractual relationship implies duties and rights for each contract party, tax compliance is increased by sticking to the fiscal exchange paradigm between citizens and the state. Citizens are willing to honestly declare income even if they do not receive a full public good equivalent to tax payments as long as the political process is perceived to be fair and legitimate. Moreover, friendly treatment of taxpayers by the tax office in auditing processes increases tax compliance.

The impact of aging on healthcare expenditure (HCE) has been at the center of a prolonged debate. This paper purports to shed light on several issues of this debate by presenting new evidence on the "red herring" hypothesis advanced by Zweifel, Felder and Meier (1999). This hypothesis amounts to distinguishing a mortality from a morbidity component in healthcare expenditure (HCE) and claiming that failure to make this distinction results in excessive estimates of future growth of HCE. A re-estimation based on a much larger data set is performed, using the refined econometric methodology. The main contribution is consistency, however. Rather than treating the mortality component as a residual in forecasting, its dynamics are analyzed in the same detail as that of the morbidity component when predicting the impact of population aging on the future growth of HCE. For the case of Switzerland, it finds this impact to be relatively small regardless of whether or not the mortality component is accounted for, thus qualifying the "red herring" hypothesis.
