(Conference or Workshop Paper published in Proceedings)
We introduce the versioned relational data model, which allows a user to apply conditional schema changes to a populated database without breaking applications compiled against an existing schema, and without loss of existing data. Our model is based on keeping a history of conditional schema changes, and converting tuples on demand to fit the correct schema in any schema version. We provide a concrete defnition of schema versioning: The ability to specify an operator on any schema version, such that the tuples in the result are unaffected by schema versions created after the specified schema version. Finally, we show that our model supports schema versioning. |

A new point estimator for the AR(1) coefficient in the linear regression model with arbitrary exogenous regressors and stationary AR(1) disturbances is developed. Its construction parallels that of the median--unbiased estimator, but uses the mode as a measure of central tendency. The mean--adjusted estimator is also considered, and saddlepoint approximations are used to lower the computational burden of all the estimators. Large--scale simulation studies for assessing their small--sample properties are conducted. Their relative performance depends almost exclusively on the value of the autoregressive parameter, with the new estimator dominating over a large part of the parameter space. |

This report presents several tracks of research on Attempto Controlled English (ACE). First, we
present the imperative mood as a new feature of version 5 of ACE. Second, we introduce an
alternative simplified DRS representation of ACE texts. Third, we discuss aspects of the logical
embedding of ACE. Fourth, we describe the verbalisation of OWL in ACE. Fifth, we present an
enhanced version of AceRules, the implementation of rules expressed in ACE. Sixth, we describe
enhancements to the Attempto services. Seventh, we list our cooperations.

Viviane Cantaluppi, Analyse des Lernerfolges bei Online-Übungen, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2007. (Master's Thesis)
This paper analyses the impact of online assessment on the learning performance of students. A positive correlation between exercise and exam performance is shown. Further investigations state the non existing influence of endless repetition of online assessments to learning performance. An influence of question-pools is shown. They are included into online assessments, for presenting different questions to each student, for them not to simply copy their answers. With question-pools, students show lower performance during exercises but an improved performance during exams can be observed. Students show higher achievements with online assessments than traditional written ones. A trend can be observed for students becoming ‘lazy’ towards the end of the course, when it comes to the preparation of the exercises. |

Tobias Schlaginhaufen, Design and Implementation of a Database Client Application for Inserting, Modifying, Presentation and Export of Bitemporal Personal Data, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2007. (Master's Thesis)
There exists only little support for temporal data in conventional relational databases, although many applications require temporal or even bitemporal storage of data. This thesis describes the implementation of a bitemporal database and a client application pursuant to it for managing study subjects of a longitudinal etiological study about adjustment and mental health. Designing a bitemporal database on top of a relational database model involves the dilemma of time-normalization. Either one uses the well-established storage organization and query evaluation techniques of relational databases and accepts a certain redundant storage of data. Or one time-normalizes the data model and avoids redundancy but, at the same time, one has to accept a degenerated relational model, which is complex, difficult to handle and may degrade the performance of a relation database system. We present an approach striking the balance between these two extremes. |

Barbara Schwarz, Visualizing Dynamic Social Network Structures, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2007. (Master's Thesis)
Since large and complex software projects consist of people playing different roles, the communication and collaboration among the team members are key success factors. This interaction is reflected in the organization and has an influence on the project and its outcome. High-quality Open Source Software (OSS) relies on having a large and sustainable community. This implies that community members must understand the project’s environment. We aim at providing a visualization prototype tool that allows the project members to interactively explore the project dynamics. This visualization extends social network graphs by work packages representing software contribution. The visualisation approach is evaluated on the Eclipse OSS community. It is shown that different scenarios and roles can be discovered, providing deeper insight into the project. |

In many application areas like e-science and data-warehousing detailed
information about the origin of data is required. This kind of information is often referred
to as data provenance or data lineage. The provenance of a data item includes
information about the processes and source data items that lead to its creation and
current representation. The diversity of data representation models and application
domains has lead to a number of more or less formal definitions of provenance. Most
of them are limited to a special application domain, data representation model or data
processing facility. Not surprisingly, the associated implementations are also restricted
to some application domain and depend on a special data model. In this paper we give
a survey of data provenance models and prototypes, present a general categorization
scheme for provenance models and use this categorization scheme to study the properties
of the existing approaches. This categorization enables us to distinguish between
different kinds of provenance information and could lead to a better understanding of
provenance in general. Besides the categorization of provenance types, it is important
to include the storage, transformation and query requirements for the different kinds of
provenance information and application domains in our considerations. The analysis
of existing approaches will assist us in revealing open research problems in the area of
data provenance. |
