(Conference or Workshop Paper published in Proceedings)
We analyze greedy geographical routing in spontaneous wireless mesh networks to show several interesting properties. First, we can approximate the dependence of packet loss probability on the mean node rank with a Fermi-Dirac function. When the mesh network grows, it becomes opaque to packets regardless of the average node rank. We also show that packet loss probability in mesh networks with greedy geographical routing does not exhibit the behavior of percolating systems. Finally, we propose an analytical model of greedy geographical routing and use it to derive packet loss probability. |

Stefano Battiston, G Weisbuch, From production networks to geographical economics, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Vol. 64 (3-4), 2007. (Journal Article)
Although standard economics textbooks are seldom interested in production networks, modern economies are more and more based upon supplier/customer interactions. One can consider entire sectors of the economy as generalised supply chains. We will take this view in the present paper and study under which conditions local failures to produce or simply to deliver can result in avalanches of shortage and bankruptcies and in localisation of the economic activity. We will show that a large class of models exhibit scale free distributions of production and wealth among firms and that regions of high production are localised. |

Egon Franck, Helmut Max Dietl, Governance failure and financial crisis in German football, Journal of Sports Economics, Vol. 8 (6), 2007. (Journal Article)
The peculiar German football governance structure may be well suited to prevent integrity problems resulting from multiple club ownership or from ownership by "undesired'' persons or entities. However, this effect comes at a price. In the vacuum of power generated within large member associations, residual rights of control are de facto allocated to representatives who do not hold residual claims. Because these representatives externalize substantial parts of the risk associated with investment decisions, they are particularly ill-suited for managing the business of professional football, which has been transformed into a "gamble on success'' by ever-increasing revenue differentials between winners and losers. At the same time, low accounting standards for members clubs, combined with "soft'' law enforcement, invite club representatives to hide their consumption on the job behavior until their clubs are insolvent. |

C Efferson, M Takezawa, R McElreath, New methods in quantitative ethnography: economic experiments and variation in the price of equality, Current Anthropology, Vol. 48 (6), 2007. (Journal Article)
We present a new method for quantitatively documenting concerns for economic fairness. In particular we focus on the method’s potential for identifying variation in
prosociality within and across societies. Specifically, we conducted multiple dictator games per player in two small-scale societies. Each game presented the decision maker with a choice between an equitable and an inequitable payoff distribution. The games varied in terms of the type of inequality the decision maker faced and in terms of
the cost to the decision maker of eliminating inequality. This latter variation in cost is what makes the method suitable for identifying the price one is willing to pay for
equality. To analyze the data, we developed a novel set of statistical models that directly link experimental results and player heterogeneity with the formal theory of
inequality aversion. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the experimental method can be generalized to allow maximum flexibility in data analysis. |

J M Burkart, Ernst Fehr, C Efferson, C P van Schaik, Other-regarding preferences in a non-human primate: common marmosets provision food altruistically, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), Vol. 104 (50), 2007. (Journal Article)
Human cooperation is unparalleled in the animal world and rests on an altruistic concern for the welfare of genetically unrelated strangers. The evolutionary roots of human altruism, however, remain poorly understood. Recent evidence suggests a discontinuity between humans and other primates because individual chimpanzees do not spontaneously
provide food to other group members, indicating a lack of concern for their welfare. Here, we demonstrate that common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) do spontaneously
provide food to non-reciprocating and genetically unrelated individuals, indicating that other-regarding preferences are not unique to humans and that their evolution did not
require advanced cognitive abilities such as theory of mind. Because humans and marmosets are cooperative breeders and the only two primate taxa in which such unsolicited prosociality has been found, we conclude that these prosocial predispositions may emanate from cooperative breeding. |

Tanja Henz, Development of Tacit Knowledgement in Project Management, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2007. (Master's Thesis)
Project management skills are required in most occupations given. Therefore this
topic is high on the agenda of people who are looking for a job as well as
students leaving the university. Unfortunately the knowledge about it is widely
spread and not always accessible for everyone. Concerning the learning process
it should be fast and inexpensive. This thesis shows different ways to gather
knowledge about project management by giving simple, theoretical founded
rules which can be used in everyday project management. With the help of these
rules an educational computer game about project management will be build.
This will then serve as a tool to educate people about project management.

Nora Kleisli, Person Fallowing in an Autonomous Suitcase, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2007. (Master's Thesis)
This thesis presents the development of a new approach for building a person
following robot that is able to operate in an unknown environment facing real
life situations. Infrared receivers are used to identify and locate a target person,
who is equipped with infrared diodes. This approach has the following advantages:
reliable identification of the target person, cheap design and good noise tolerance.
The process of implementing the new person following strategy revealed several
inherent restrictions of the existing platform, which thus had to be revised.
Therefore the approach could no be implemented completely. Nevertheless it is still promising and should be pursued in continuation of the RoboSuitcase project. |

Christian Signer, Mobile Community Reiseführer, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2007. (Master's Thesis)
Travelling has changed rapidly over the last few years. Ordinary guidebooks are challenged by the arising competition from the Internet, where people with similar interests exchange information through communities. This knowledge is getting ubiquitous since the number of mobile devices with internet capability is rising.
This work presents a design concept for a mobile digital guidebook, the MoCoGuide, which receives information from the knowledge of a mobile community. Key factors are identi ed and described. The choice of media is important for this guide since mobile devices are multimediabased. A eld study analyzes the choice of media and tests the prototype regarding usability. Finally, the drawn conclusions are inspected critically and an outlook for further research project is given. |

Kenji Suter, Handheld 3D-Laserscanner, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2007. (Master's Thesis)
Given a 3D-Scanner based on a static construction with a turntable, the goal of this project is to free the dependency on static geometries to build a handheld 3D laser scanner. As hardly any geometrical parameters have been provided, the key to implement the handheld scanner is to work out the position of the camera in space as this is the basis for every calculation. In addition the laser plane describing the laser line crossing the camera view needs to be calculated to determine the location of detected laser points relative to the camera. When combining the camera position with the projected laser points of continuous images the shape of the target object can be extracted. |

André Locher, SPARQL-ML: Knowledge Discovery for the Semantic Web, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2007. (Master's Thesis)
Machine learning as well as data mining has been successfully applied to automatically or semiautomatically create Semantic Web data from plain data. Only little work has been done so far to explore the possibilities of machine learning to induce models from existing Semantic Web data. The interlinked structure of Semantic Web data allows to include relations between entities in addition to attributes of entities of propositional data mining techniques. It is, therefore, a perfect match for Statistical Relational Learning methods (SRL), which combine relational learning with statistics and probability theory.
This thesis presents SPARQL-ML, a novel approach to perform data mining tasks for knowledge discovery in the SemanticWeb. Our approach is based on SPARQL and allows the use of statistical relational learning methods, such as Relational Probability Trees and Relational Bayesian Classifiers, as well as traditional propositional learning methods. We perform different experiments to evaluate our approach on synthetic and real-world datasets. The results show that SPARQL-ML is able to successfully combine statistical induction and logic deduction. |

Stefan Schurgast, Export von Datenbankinhalten in Datenformate von Statistikprogrammen, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2007. (Bachelor's Thesis)
The sesamDB Project is a subproject of the interdisciplinary long time study sesam about the etiology
of mental health. Its main task is to develop a database for scientific and administrative data for
sesam as well as the implementation of client applications. In order to analyze the stored data with
statistical analysis software, Sesam Export Manager has been built to extract data from sesamDB to
data types of popular statistics applications. The therefore developed graphical user interface helps
the user to obtain the data he needs without having knowledge of the underlying database schemes
or query languages. This paper contains a composition of related work, the development process and
the architecture of Sesam Export Manager. |
