Attempto Controlled English (ACE) is a controlled natural language, i.e. a precisely defined subset of English that can automatically and unambiguously be translated into first-order logic. ACE may seem to be completely natural, but is actually a formal language, concretely it is a first-order logic language with an English syntax. Thus ACE is human and machine understandable. ACE was originally intended to specify software, but has since been used as a general knowledge representation language in several application domains, most recently for the semantic web. ACE is supported by a number of tools, predominantly by the Attempto Parsing Engine (APE) that translates ACE texts into Discourse Representation Structures (DRS), a variant of first-order logic. Other tools include the Attempto Reasoner RACE, the AceRules system, the ACE View plug-in for the Protégé ontology editor, AceWiki, and the OWL verbaliser. |

In today’s world, document management plays an increasingly important role. However, there is currently no solution to manage complex documents in an integrated manner. Typically, existing approaches provide only limited document management capabilities and do not offer comprehensive access, manipulation and retrieval functionalities for all document elements. In this paper, we present conceptual and architectural foundations of Pylonix, a database module tailored for integrated collaborative document management. A novel data model capable of representing complex documents including all their elements is outlined. We propose a software architecture which allows the module to be integrated into applications requiring fine-grained document management and offers database and data model independence by using an intermediate language. Finally, we present functionalities, capabilities and advantages of Pylonix in comparison with existing work. |

The emerging field of visual analytics changes the way we model, gather, and analyze data. Current data analysis approaches suggest to gather as much data as possible and then focus on goal and process oriented data analysis techniques. Visual analytics changes this approach and the methodology to interpret the results becomes the key issue. This paper contributes with a method to interpret visual hierarchical heavy hitters (VHHHs). We show how to analyze data on the general level and how to examine specific areas of the data. We identify five common patterns that build the interpretation alphabet of VHHHs. We demonstrate our method on three different real world datasets and show the effectiveness of our approach. |

Over the past few years IT offshoring has become one of the most important corporate strategies in the software industry and is facing a diversity of challenges. One of them is the efficient transfer of knowledge between two companies, separated significantly in terms of time zone, geographical and cultural distance. Cultural aspects hence represent one of the most critical elements. While considering the software development process, requirements engineering is one of the most critical steps and implies an immense communication effort. When now the cross-cultural layer is added it seems to be a hardly solvable task. However, actual research on this section of knowledge transfer within offshore software development under cross-cultural settings is still limited. This is a research in progress paper using a qualitative research setting carried out with an explanatory case study involving the software requirements specification (SRS) as the knowledge to be transferred between IT companies in Germany and India. The basis of this paper is that, for the start of successful transfer of knowledge we suggest the storytelling methodology as a suitable tool to overcome these difficulties. Thus we are asking, how storytelling affects the inception of knowledge transfer in offshore software development projects. |

The storage of IP traffic traces increasingly grows more complex, since data flows tend to increase largely over time. Network operator’s backbones generate each day hundreds of Gigabyte of IP flow records that need to be stored and analyzed. Handling such amount of data requires a high-performance hardware and software. One way to leverage performance requirements of a storing and analysis of traffic data is to design a distributed platform to replace centralized solutions existing today. This paper designs a scalable storage platform for IP flow records. The evaluation of the implemented prototype shows that such an approach can offer a good and practical solution for storing and retrieving high amounts of IP flow records. |
