M Scherrer-Rathje, T A Boyle, Patricia Deflorin, Lean, take two! Reflections from the second attempt at lean implementation, Business Horizons, Vol. 52 (1-2), 2009. (Journal Article)
It’s not easy being lean. And for many companies, getting lean right the first time does not always happen. Lean is a management philosophy focused on identifying and eliminating waste throughout a product’s entire value stream, extending not only within the organization but also along the company’s supply chain network. Lean promises significant benefits in terms of waste reduction, and increased organizational and supply chain communication and integration. Implementing lean, however, and achieving the levels of organizational commitment, employee autonomy, and information transparency needed to ensure its success is a daunting task. This article describes in detail two lean implementation projects within the same company: a global manufacturer of food processing machines and equipment. The first project was a failure, while the second is viewed as a success. Examining these projects in detail, the major criteria and conditions that led to either lean failure or lean success are identified. Based on these conditions, we highlight a number of lessons learned, all of which may help other organizations ensure the success of their own lean implementation and improvement efforts. |

Margit Osterloh, Antoinette Weibel, The governance of explorative knowledge production, In: Knowledge Governance: Processes and Perspectives, Oxford University Press, Oxford, p. 138 - 165, 2009-01. (Book Chapter)
The generation of new knowledge is crucial for a firm’s competitive advantage. We analyze explorative knowledge production in teams as a social dilemma. Such social dilemmas can to some extent be solved by transactional solutions such as activating the shadow of the future or
selective incentives. But transformational solutions are more important. Employee’s intrinsic initiative to participate in knowledge exploration is crowded-out by certain high-powered incentives and unfriendly monitoring. It is crowded-in by, low-powered incentives, friendly
monitoring, communication and institutional framing. We conclude that there exist convincing ideas of how to govern explorative knowledge production which should be tested
empirically. |

Stephan Nüesch, A Note on the Endogeneity of Pay-Performance Relationship in Professional Soccer, Economics Bulletin, Vol. 29 (3), 2009. (Journal Article)
Torgler and Schmidt (2007) have recently found a positive impact of pay on player performance in German soccer,
measured by the number of goals and assists scored within a season. This note shows that their result is spurious as
both a player's wage and goal/assist scoring are driven by individual playing abilities. Holding the (unobserved) timeinvariant
and the varying talent of a player constant, the positive pay-performance link is no longer statistically
significant. In professional soccer, wages seem to buy talent rather than motivation. |

Margit Osterloh, Jetta Frost, Bad for practice – good for practice from economic imperialism to multidisciplinary mapping, Journal of International Business Ethics, Vol. 2 (1), 2009. (Journal Article)
There is a growing debate about economics not only being bad for practice but also destroying good management practice. The focus of this debate has been on the negative influences of wrong assumptions in theory building which become a self-fulfilling prophecy. We analyze why standard
economics indeed can be bad for managerial and political practice. Aside from wrong assumptions, economic imperialism is another important factor. We argue that psychological economics is better for practice than standard economics, but is still not good for practice, as long as it uses an imperialistic approach. We propose a different research strategy, which we call multidisciplinary mapping. It not only bridges between different disciplinary approaches but also between the knowledge of scholars and practitioners. It is good for practice as well as for theory building. |
