Diethard Klatte, Bernd Kummer, Optimization methods and stability of inclusions in Banach Spaces, Mathematical Programming, Vol. 117 (1-2), 2009. (Journal Article)
Our paper deals with the interrelation of optimization methods and Lipschitz stability of multifunctions in arbitrary Banach spaces. Roughly speaking, we show that linear convergence of several first order methods and Lipschitz stability mean the same. Particularly, we characterize calmness and the Aubin property by uniformly (with respect to certain starting points) linear convergence of descent methods and approximate projection methods. So we obtain, e.g., solution methods (for solving equations or variational problems) which require calmness only. The relations of these methods to several known basic algorithms are discussed, and errors in the subroutines as well as deformations of the given mappings are permitted. We also recall how such deformations are related to standard algorithms like barrier, penalty or regularization methods in optimization. |

Florian Stahl, A Herrmann, Versionierung und Preisbündelung bei digitalen Produkten: Welche Formen der Differenzierung erhöhen die Nachfrage und den Umsatz?, Die Unternehmung, Vol. 63 (3), 2009. (Journal Article)

Christopher Lettl, Katja Rost, Iwan von Wartburg, Why are some independent inventors ‘heroes’ and others ‘hobbyists’?: the moderating role of technological diversity and specialization, Research Policy, Vol. 38 (2), 2009. (Journal Article)
Despite a substantial body of research investigating the market significance of inventions by independent inventors, relatively little attention has been devoted to understanding their technological significance. A recent study conducted by [Dahlin, K., Taylor, M., Fichman, M., 2004. Today's Edisons or weekend hobbyists: technical impact and success of inventions by independent inventors. Res. Policy 33, 1167–1183] on the tennis racket industry shows that independent inventors are a heterogeneous group which includes both “heroes” who contribute substantially to technological progress and “hobbyists” who make only a marginal contribution. What is not asked – and therefore not explained – is why this distinction arises. In this paper, we focus on the type of prior technological knowledge (in terms of technological specialization and diversity) applied by independent inventors and their corporate counterparts as a factor explaining differences in technological impact. Our empirical setting is the field of medical equipment technology. We find that independent inventors are more sensitive to the negative effects of technological diversity than their corporate counterparts. Furthermore, our study reveals that technological specialization pays off more for independent inventors than for their corporate counterparts. Therefore, those independent inventors who apply low degrees of diversity and high degrees of specialization are capable of reaching the same level as or even outperforming their corporate counterparts, thus becoming “heroes”. Based on our findings, we discuss implications for research and corporate practice. |

Ernst Fehr, Martin Brown, Christian Zehnder, On reputation: a microfoundation of contract enforcement and price rigidity, Economic Journal, Vol. 119 (536), 2009. (Journal Article)
We study the impact of reputational incentives in markets characterized by moral hazard problems. Social preferences have been shown to enhance contract enforcement in these markets, while at the same time generating considerable wage and price rigidity. Reputation powerfully amplifies the positive effects of social preferences on contract enforcement by increasing contract efficiency substantially. This effect is, however, associated with a considerable bilateralisation of market interactions, suggesting that it may aggravate price rigidities. Surprisingly, reputation in fact weakens the wage and price rigidities arising from social preferences. Thus, in markets characterized by moral hazard, reputational incentives unambiguously increase mutually beneficial exchanges, reduce rents, and render markets more responsive to supply and demand shocks. |

Bruno Frey, Simon Luechinger, Alois Stutzer, The life satisfaction approach to valuing public goods: The case of terrorism, Public Choice, Vol. 138 (3-4), 2009. (Journal Article)
Terrorism has large social costs that are difficult to quantify for the well-known problems of eliciting people’s preferences for public goods. We use the LSA to assess these costs in utility and monetary terms. Based on combined cross-section time-series data, we estimate the costs of terrorism for France and the British Isles. We find large negative effects of terrorism on life satisfaction that translate into considerable compensating surpluses for a hypothetical reduction in terrorism, in particular for the serious conflict in Northern Ireland. The effects of terrorism are robust and differ across groups in accordance with prior expectations. |

M I Garrido, J M Kilner, Klaas Enno Stephan, K J Friston, The mismatch negativity: a review of underlying mechanisms, Clinical Neurophysiology, Vol. 120 (3), 2009. (Journal Article)
The mismatch negativity (MMN) is a brain response to violations of a rule, established by a sequence of sensory stimuli (typically in the auditory domain) [Näätänen R. Attention and brain function. Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum; 1992]. The MMN reflects the brain’s ability to perform automatic comparisons between consecutive stimuli and provides an electrophysiological index of sensory learning and perceptual accuracy. Although the MMN has been studied extensively, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the MMN are not well understood. Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain the generation of the MMN; amongst these accounts, the “adaptation hypothesis” and the “model adjustment hypothesis” have received the most attention. This paper presents a review of studies that focus on neuronal mechanisms underlying the MMN generation, discusses the two major explanatory hypotheses, and proposes predictive coding as a general framework that attempts to unify both. |

Nikolaus Steinbeis, Stefan Koelsch, Understanding the intentions behind man-made products elicits neural activity in areas dedicated to mental state attribution, Cerebral Cortex, Vol. 19 (3), 2009. (Journal Article)
Trying to understand others is the most pervasive aspect of successful social interaction. To date there is no evidence on whether human products, which signal the workings of a mind in the absence of an explicit agent, also reliably engage neural structures typically associated with mental state attribution. By means of functional magnetic resonance imaging the present study shows that when subjects believe they are listening to a piece of music that was written by a composer (i.e., human product) as opposed to generated by a computer (i.e., nonhuman product), activations in the cortical network typically reported for mental state attribution (anterior medial frontal cortex [aMFC]), superior temporal sulcus, and temporal poles) were observed. The activation in the aMFC correlated highly with the extent to which subjects had engaged in attributing the expression of intentions to the composed pieces, as indicated in a postimaging questionnaire. We interpret these findings as indicative of automatic mechanisms, which reflect mental state attribution in the face of any stimulus that potentially signals the working of another mind and conclude that even in the absence of a socially salient stimulus, our environment is still populated by the indirect social signals inherent to human artifacts. |

Manuel Innerhofer, Implementation of the OSGi Platform Specification in ActionScript 3, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Master's Thesis)
Through the improvements of ActionScript 3.0 (AS3), it got attractive to implement more complex applications such as Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). But large and complex applications bring new challenges: How to reduce complexity, how to make reusable components, and how to organize components? Java already got a solution to this problems: The OSGi framework. The question I tried to answer is, if it is possible to bring the advantages to AS3/Flash developers. I did this by implementing the OSGi core specification in AS3. My implementation called Hotpot Framework supports almost all functionality. I come to the conclusion, that a framework like the Hotpot Framework could be beneficial to AS3/Flash developers.

Michael Imhof, Optimization strategies for RDFS-aware data storage, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Master's Thesis)
Indexing and storing triple-based Semantic Web data in a way to allow for efficient query
processing has long been a difficult task. A recent approach to address this issue is the index-
ing scheme Hexastore. In this work, we propose two novel on-disk storage models for Hexastore,
that use RDF Schema information to gather data that semantically belong together and store them
contiguously. In the clustering approach, elements of the same classes are stored contiguously
within the indices. In the subindex approach, data of the same categories are saved in separate
subindices. Thus, we expect to simplify and accelerate the retrieving process of Hexastore. The
experimental evaluation shows a clear advantage of the standard storage model against the pro-
posed approaches in terms of index creation time and required disk space. |

Olivier Wirz, Entwurf und Implementierung eines SQL-DDL-Präprozessors zur Unterstützung von Datenbankentwurfsmustern, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Master's Thesis)
Design patterns have become essential in software development. They identify
good design and define a vocabulary among developers. Recurring patterns also
exist in database schema design but are not as well documented as design pat-
terns of other areas in software development such as e.g. design patterns of
object-oriented development. This diploma thesis provides examples of design
patterns for schema creation for relational databases. We refer to this type of
patterns as Database Design Patterns. We present SQLPP, a SQL preprocessor
for macro processing. SQLPP enables users to store and reuse design patterns
for schema creation, whereas the design patterns are defined in macros. |

Marc Körsgen, Analysis Broker, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Bachelor's Thesis)
Today, Software Analysis is a common instrument in the software development environment. As
result of that, many software analysis tools were developed. Ghezzi et al. GG08 from the Department
of Informatics of the University of Zurich focused on the problem that the possibility to
access and combine these tools is strongly limited. Their approach is to hide each tool behind a
web service interface and publish these on a centralized broker. Furthermore these analysis services
are semantically annotated and thus can be categorized by a predefined Software Analysis
Taxonomy.
This bachelor thesis deals with the development of a software prototype to implement the desired
features such as indexing and categorizing analysis services. The goal is to implement a web
service that delivers these features. Beside the web service a Flash based visualization, which accesses
the service, should give human users the possibility to administrate and browse the service
catalog.
At the beginning of this paper, the Software Analysis Taxonomy, according to which the analysis
services are categorized, gets defined, and extended to satisfy the needs of storing web services
and its parameters. Furthermore a structure, how the analysis services have to be described in
their SAWSDL, gets defined.
The main part of this thesis focuses on the actual implementation of the Analysis Broker. Thus it
is giving an overview about the concepts behind the catalog service and its visualization. On the
basis of several examples, the paper reveals the functionality and the design decisions. |

Jann Sigrist, Conceptual Design and Implementation of an Adgame, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Master's Thesis)
Adgames have enjoyed a great popularity recently. This work shows which points a company needs to consider regarding the conception and implementation of an Adgame. Gameplay, sound effects, music, and graphics are the keys to a great game. In terms of advertising, the game should be optimised for the biggest user group, the leisure players. The advertising should be decent but still visible. The best method is the demonstrative advertainment where the users interact with the product or the service to be promoted. In order to increase the number of players, viral marketing should be used by way of the integration of a recommendation form. Furthermore, an implementation of an Adgame for the company Dwarf8 is made with the knowledge acquired in this thesis. |

Silvio Aurelio, Aspekt Datenqualität im Customer Data Management am Beispiel der schweizerischen Finanzindustrie, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Master's Thesis)
The importance of high quality data is particularly increasing within the scope of customer data representing strategic resources. This study concerns customer data quality within the Swiss Finance Industry, mentioning methods to capture and improve data quality as well as maintaining a high quality level. The study consists of two core components. A questionnaire investigates the status of data quality within enterprises. Furthermore, a technical analysis examines data quality by means of different quality dimensions. Thereafter, results from both studies are compared. They reveal - from the contemporary viewpoint - how customer data quality is ensured within a bank and whether potential for improvement is existent. In addition, different approaches are presented in order to exploit these capabilities. |

Dan Agam, Implementierung eines Spiels zur optimalen Anpassung an den Spielenden, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Bachelor's Thesis)
This work describes the development of a game. The idea is to adapt learning games to
the users and their abilities in an optimal way, so that the users may reach a state of full
concentration in which the success of learning is maximised.
Based on the flow theory, an online game was programmed, which measures and stores
various data when it is played. A future evaluation of the obtained series of measurements
would then show, which of them are relevant, in order to be able to make statements about
the condition of the respective player. |

Philipp Kräutli, Lernplattform zur Messung von Lernerfolg und Flow., University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Master's Thesis)
This thesis deals with the development of a tutorial application on Regular Expressions. Regular Expressions are a means to describe text patterns and are based on formal language theories. The application can be used in two different modes, the default mode and the so-called flow mode. In flow mode the application tries to get the user into a flow state employing elements based on flow theories. These elements are not used in default mode, however, there are no elements specifically designed to prevent flow. Following the tutorial's development, an experiment using EEG measurements has been conducted. The aim of the experiment was to determine the suitability of the flow elements. Using statistical analysis, siginificantly higher flow values have been found in flow mode.

Philipp Toggweiler, Benutzerverhalten im Flow-Zustand, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Master's Thesis)
In the area of E-Learning and Game Base Learning†there is significant interest in the understanding of Flow; and utilisation of the positive aspects of Flow. One of the main questions is related to the behaviour of users in the flow status: Are there significant physiological differences between people who are in Flow state, and those who are not? Of further interest is the question, whether users interact differently at the user interface in both conditions.
In order to investigate this question, a reproducible test was designed and created. An adaptable learning game allows subjects to either gain flow status or hinders them. While playing the game the subjects' interactions with the GUI and their EEG (Electroencephalogram) were recorded.
The analysis of the resulting data showed, there were indeed distinctive differences in physiological reactions and in user interactions between subjects in Flow state and those who were not.

Stéphane Guérard, Struggles for meaning and struggles for control : The diffusion of bandwagon technology in two institutional environments, University of Zurich, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology, 2009. (Dissertation)
In this thesis, I examine the diffusion process for a complex medical technology, the PET scanner, in two different health care systems, one of which is more marketoriented (Switzerland) and the other more centrally managed by a public agency (Quebec). The research draws on institutional and socio-political theories of the diffusion of innovations to examine how institutional contexts affect processes of diffusion. I find that diffusion proceeds more rapidly in Switzerland than in Quebec, but that processes in both jurisdictions are characterized by intense struggles among providers and between providers and public agencies. I show that the institutional environment influences these processes by determining the patterns of material resources and authority available to actors in their struggles to strategically control the technology, and by constituting the discursive resources or institutional logics on which actors may legitimately draw in their struggles to give meaning to the technology in line with their interests and values. This thesis illustrates how institutional structures and meanings manifest themselves in the context of specific decisions within an organizational field, and reveals the ways in which governance structures may be contested and realigned when they conflict with interests that are legitimized by dominant institutional logics. It is argued that this form of contestation and readjustment at the margins constitutes one mechanism by which institutional frameworks are tested, stretched and reproduced or redefined. |
