Sustainable development is a political concept with a strong normative component. In this article we show which implications follow from this normative component if it is interpreted in a natural science context. We conclude that from a natural science point of view a far-reaching dematerialization of consumption is a necessary condition for sustainable development. We further conclude that Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can only support sustainable development if they are applied as enablers of dematerialized (less material-intensive) types of consumption. Macro-level data on consumption shows, however, that average material flows per capita are still increasing. In this problematical situation we see a need for framework conditions which provide incentives for dematerialization and specialized research on the psychosocial conditions on the basis of which consumption patterns could evolve towards a more dematerialized economy.

Due to the enormous size of high-resolution volume data visualized in the areas such as bio-medical imaging, computational fluid or the increasing importance of video communication, efficient and compact data representations are important. Most of the compression techniques known today, especially in signal analysis and image compression, use wavelet filters for compression and decompression. This thesis focuses mainly on the Haar and the Daubechies wavelet transform, a library for the decomposition and composition of volume data has been made and tested. An introduction of the filter banks in 1-D, 2-D and 3-D will be illustrated, associated properties of the common wavelet transform, especially of the Haar and Daubechies filters, will be given. Papers, in the field of data compression, of the last ten years have been investigated, classified and illustrated.

In this bachelor thesis we show how EVOSPACES 2 can be extended to take full advantage of a multi-user, touch sensitive environment such as the Microsoft Surface. The goal of EVOSPACES 2 is to allow software engineers to collaborate on software understanding, software evolution and software production. The idea is to combine the capabilities that are provided by this specific environment with the principle of graphically visualizing software. Software visualization can greatly improve an engineer’s perception and understanding of a piece of software. Combining it with the intuitive interaction of a multi-touch environment further enhances the usability and usefulness.

Dieser technische Bericht beschreibt Controlled Legal German (CLG). CLG ist konzipiert als eine Teilmenge der Schweizerischen Gesetzessprache mit einer eindeutigen formalen Semantik auf der Basis deontischer Logik. CLG soll also beides sein: natürliche Sprache und formal-logische Repräsentationsform. Das in diesem Bericht beschriebene Sprachfragment, CLG 1.0, stellt ein Basisinventar an sprachlichen Konstruktionen zur Verfügung, mit dem einfache Normkonzepte - Gebote, Verbote, Erlaubnisse, Bedingungen, Rechtsfolgen - formuliert werden können. Es kann insbesondere als Hilfsmittel verwendet werden, um die grundlegenden Konzepte der deontischen Logik zu erlernen und das Zusammenspiel zwischen deontischer Logik und natürlicher Sprache zu studieren.

Die Verifikation von kleinen eindimensionalen molekularen Protonstrukturen mittels NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) ist eine zentrale Methode für die Entdeckung und Entwicklung von Medikamenten geworden. Der manuelle Verifikationsprozess ist jedoch ineffizient, womit diese Methode sich auf ein Entscheidungsinstrument für die Identifikation von molekularen Strukturen beschränkt. Betrachtet man die unbestreitbaren Vorteile von NMR in der Identifikation von molekularen Strukturen (verglichen mit anderen Techniken), liegt auf der Hand, dass die Verbreitung dieser Technologie als routinemässige Verifikationsmethode für molekulare Strukturen die Entwicklung von Medikamenten erheblich effizienter machen kann, insbesondere im Compound Library Management der pharmazeutischen Industrie. Dementsprechend wurde Software für die automatisierte NMR Structure Verification entwickelt, in der Literatur beschrieben sowie kommerziell vertrieben. Leider sind diese Ansätze grundsätzlich limitiert (und hängen beispielweise stark von der Chemical Shift Prediction ab) und sind in der Praxis nicht einsetzbar. Angesichts der hohen Motivation durch die Industrie schlagen wir einen alternativen Ansatz für das vorliegende Problem vor. Wir schlagen vor, Prinzipien der Künstlichen Intelligenz (AI) zu nutzen, um das Vorgehen eine Spektroskopisten in der NMR Molekülstruktur-Verfikation zu simulieren. Geleitet durch diese Strategie wird ein auf menschlicher Logik basierender Optimierungsansatz entwickelt, um den Entscheidungsprozess des Spektoskopisten zu simulieren. Der Ansatz basiert auf einem Wahrscheinlichkeitsmodell, das benutzt wird, um den auf menschlicher Logik basierenden Optimierungsansatz mit dem Maximum Likelihood Framework zu vereinigen. Desweiteren wird ein neues System für die 1D 1H NMR Verifikation molekularer Strukturen entwickelt und auf dem vorgängig erwähnten Optimierungsprozess implementiert. Um die zahlreichen NMR Spektroskopisten und andere am Prozess interessierte zu überzeugen, werden umfassende Experimente präsentiert, die aufzeigen, dass das System eine sehr hohe Leistung sowohl in der Genauigkeit wie auch in der Konsistenz im Vergleich mit Spektroskopisten in den genutzten Test Sets hat (1) Dieses Resultat validiert die Korrektheit unseres Ansatzes sowie die Machbarkeit, industrielle Software basierend auf unserem System zu bauen für den praktischen Einsatz in industriellen Strukturverifikationsumgebungen. Dementsprechend ist kommerzielle Software, die auf unserem System basiert in der Entwicklung in einem bedeutenden NMR Hersteller, welche in der pharmazeutischen Industrie released werden wird. Abschliessend diskutiert diese Arbeit Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen der Optimierung basierend auf menschlicher Logik und anderen verbreiteten Optimierungsansätzen mit einem speziellen Fokus auf der Anwendbarkeit. (1) Um eine praktische Auswertung zu ermöglichen, werden detailierte Structural Verification Reports von 81 Verbindungen, die durch das System generiert wurden im Appendix katalogisiert. Wir hoffen dass durch diese Diskussionen die Optimierung basierend auf menschlicher Logik als Referenz für andere praxisorientierte Informatiker für die Lösung anderer Automationsprobleme in anderen Gebieten genutzt wird.

Early adversity, for example poor caregiving, can have profound effects on emotional development. Orphanage rearing, even in the best circumstances, lies outside of the bounds of a species-typical caregiving environment. The long-term effects of this early adversity on the neurobiological development associated with socio-emotional behaviors are not well understood. Seventy-eight children, who include those who have experienced orphanage care and a comparison group, were assessed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to measure volumes of whole brain and limbic structures (e.g. amygdala, hippocampus). Emotion regulation was assessed with an emotional go-nogo paradigm, and anxiety and internalizing behaviors were assessed using the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders, the Child Behavior Checklist, and a structured clinical interview. Late adoption was associated with larger corrected amygdala volumes, poorer emotion regulation, and increased anxiety. Although more than 50% of the children who experienced orphanage rearing met criteria for a psychiatric disorder, with a third having an anxiety disorder, the group differences observed in amygdala volume were not driven by the presence of an anxiety disorder. The findings are consistent with previous reports describing negative effects of prolonged orphanage care on emotional behavior and with animal models that show long-term changes in the amygdala and emotional behavior following early postnatal stress. These changes in limbic circuitry may underlie residual emotional and social problems experienced by children who have been internationally adopted.

We investigate the impact of EMU on macroeconomic volatility. The volatilities of inflation and nominal interest rates have declined, as has, more importantly, the volatility of real consumption growth. Since global volatility has fallen for reasons unrelated to EMU (the great moderation), we focus on the volatilities of bilateral differences in growth rates (or changes). Pairs of EMU countries have experienced the greatest fall in consumption volatility, followed by pairs in which one country is an EMU member. We demonstrate that these findings are closely linked to changes in consumption risk sharing. Overall, EMU has made a difference.
