Enrico G De Giorgi, Thierry Post, Loss Aversion with a State-Dependent Reference Point, Management Science, Vol. 57 (6), 2011. (Journal Article)
This study investigates reference-dependent choice with a stochastic, state-dependent reference point. The optimal reference-dependent solution equals the optimal consumption solution (no loss aversion) if the reference point is selected fully endogenously. Given that loss aversion is widespread, we conclude that the reference point generally includes an important exogenously fixed component. We develop a choice model in which adjustment costs can cause stickiness relative to an initial, exogenous reference point. Using historical U.S. investment benchmark data, we show that this model is consistent with diversification across bonds and stocks for a wide range of evaluation horizons, despite the historically high-risk premium of stocks compared to bonds. |

Armin Falk, Josef Zweimüller, Andreas Kuhn, Unemployment and Right-Wing Extremist Crime, Scandinavian Journal of Economics, Vol. 113 (2), 2011. (Journal Article)
It is frequently argued that unemployment plays a crucial role in the occurrence of right-wing extremist crimes (RECs). We test this hypothesis empirically using data from Germany. We find that right-wing criminal activities occur more frequently when unemployment is high. The substantial difference in the numbers of RECs occurring in the East and West German states can mostly be attributed to differences in unemployment. This finding reinforces the importance of unemployment as an explanatory factor for RECs, and it questions explanations based solely on the different socialization in former communist East Germany and the liberal West German states |

Anselm Jakob Schneider, Andreas Scherer, Polanyi reloaded - a historical perspective on the relationship between corporate responsibility and the welfare-state, In: 11th EURAM conference. 2011. (Conference Presentation)
This article argues that in the capitalist system of market economy, businesses contribute to the stabilization of society by way of activities that go beyond their economic engagement in markets. The analysis of the relationship between corporate nonmarket activities – corporate social engagement as well as political activities such as lobbying – and the modern welfare state suggests that both types of nonmarket activities can be conceived as intra-organizational realizations of the contradictory societal principles of economic liberalism and social protectionism. The combination of these varieties of corporate nonmarket activities and their underlying logics (instrumental logic in the case of political activities and prosocial logic in the case of social engagement) within a single framework contributes to the understanding of the dynamics and functions of the multiplicity of corporate activities by going beyond focusing on purely economic explanations. In addition, we emphasize the dangers of an instrumental approach to corporate social engagement. |

Christoph Eisenegger, Johannes Haushofer, Ernst Fehr, The role of testosterone in social interaction, Trends in Cognitive Sciences, Vol. 15 (6), 2011. (Journal Article)
Although animal researchers established the role of testosterone as a social hormone decades ago, the investigation of its causal influence on human social behaviors has only recently begun. Here, we review and discuss recent studies showing the causal effects of testosterone on social interactions in animals and humans, and outline the basic neurobiological mechanisms that might underlie these effects. Based on these recent findings, we argue that the role of testosterone in human social behavior might be best understood in terms of the search for, and maintenance of, social status. |

(Conference or Workshop Paper published in Proceedings)
In this paper we report on a study exploring multiple aspects of a virtual doctor’s visit as a commonly used example for telemedical services. We compare the conventional doctor’s visit with the virtual visit to identify user requirements and needs for the acceptance of such a scenario. In our survey we retrieved data from a total of 93 users between 16 and 67 years. The results of this study describe differences (and similarities) of criteria for choosing a doctor, basic requirements to accept a virtual doctor’s visit, and people’s opinions on common pro and contra arguments on this scenario. We analyzed the data for potential influences from various user characteristics, such as age, gender, social behavior, or technical competence. Interestingly, most of the reported concerns are not influenced by gender or age, while
participants’ technical self-confidence is related with various acceptance aspects. |

(Conference or Workshop Paper published in Proceedings)
Systematic decision support for architectural design decisions is a major concern for software architects of evolving service-oriented systems. In practice, architects often analyse the expected performance and reliability of design alternatives based on prototypes or former experience. Model-driven prediction methods claim to uncover the tradeoffs between different alternatives quantitatively while being more cost-effective and less error-prone. However, they often suffer from weak tool support and focus on single quality attributes. Furthermore, there is limited evidence on their effectiveness based on documented industrial case studies. Thus, we have applied a novel, model-driven prediction method called Q-ImPrESS on a large-scale process control system consisting of several million lines of code from the automation domain to evaluate its evolution scenarios. This paper reports our experiences with the method and lessons learned. Benefits of Q-ImPrESS are the good architectural decision support and comprehensive tool framework, while one drawback is the time-consuming data collection. |
