In the study at hand, I investigate the consequences of a hypothetical Swiss exit from the European single market using stock price reactions of companies from the United Kingdom of Great Britain. By using the stock price reactions, the study's focus is drawn on different sectors. The results show that Swiss firms would be affected negatively by a potential exit with a cumulative abnormal return of -2 % on average. Considering that Switzerland, compared to the United Kingdom of Great Britain, is not a member state of the European Union, I assume that the CAR would be less negative.

he long-run underperformance of initial public off erings (IPOs) is a well-documented phenomenon. This st udy reviews the theories and provides evidence for up to a three-year aftermarket period from a sample of 67 stoc k issues at the SIX Swiss Exchange between 2000 and 2015. The analysis of the anomaly is based on several alternative approaches. Applying event-time returns, it was found that investors on average realise an abnormal return of up to -26.66%. Calendar-time portfolio returns confirm underperformance. Significance, however, highly depends on the methodology, which counters a distinct IPO effect. Various multiple regression models provide some explanations for the return behaviour. Firm size and the new economy sector exert a negative impact, while firm age and underwriter reputation indicate a positive influence. The outcomes partly support the uncertainty and divergence of opinion hypothesis.

This paper investigates whether certain investors either prefer or dislike holding firms that exploit more of the available regulatory wiggle room and if such a strategy pays off. Exploited wiggle room (WR) is captured by relatively aggressive tax planning, financial reporting, and earnings management practices. I find that long-term, low-turnover investors hold firms with 3% higher exploited WR than those held by short-term, high- turnover investors. After experiencing misconduct that breaches their trust, investors significantly reduce the exploited WR of their holdings. Overall, investors seem to have heterogeneous preferences for WR exploitation and a liking for cautious firms that cannot be explained by a prot maximization motive alone.

Diversität an der Spitze von Grossunternehmen ist heute „state of the art“ und wird aus ökonomischen, regulatorischen und gesellschaftlichen Gründen weiter an Bedeutung gewinnen. Der Verwaltungsrat steht als oberstes Firmenorgan besonders im Fokus und ist Gegenstand vieler Diskussionen. Elementar ist die Frage, ob und inwiefern Diversität im Verwaltungsrat Auswirkungen auf die wirtschaftliche Leistung eines Unternehmens hat. Mit einer empirischen Analyse über den Zeitraum von 2007 bis 2016 untersucht die vorliegende Forschungsarbeit diesen Zusammenhang für die Schweizer Firmen-landschaft, beleuchtet potenzielle Wirkungskanäle und erweitert die reine Finanzsicht um Investoren-perspektiven. Verschiedene Diversitätsdimensionen werden vereint, qualitativ und quantitativ fundiert und erlauben ein umfassendes Gesamtbild.

How do market prices adjust towards stability after a shock? Tracking individual stock prices following their dramatic shakeup after Donald Trump’s surprise election provides an answer. Prices moved overwhelmingly in the appropriate direction on the first post-election day, albeit much too little. Relative prices needed several daily iterations to converge. Three days of historically strong cross-sectional momentum were followed by a brief reversal. Prices then settled. Firm characteristics that explained first-day returns, such as corporate taxes and foreign revenues, accounted for most of the observed momentum. These findings support prominent theories of slow but predictable diffusion of information into prices.

Massive dollars shuttled back and forth among firms on the twisted path to and passage of the 2017 tax reform. Prices of individual stocks responded to the difference between initial and revised expectations. From the bill’s initiation in the House to final passage, high-tax firms gained significantly, given the dramatic cut from 35% to 21% in the corporate tax rate. Internationally-oriented firms suffered notably, since investors assessed that the surprisingly high repatriation tax outweighed the benefits from territorial taxation. Daily price movements show that the aggregate market responded positively to lower expected taxes.

Diese Arbeit untersucht den Effekt von Diversität auf die Ehrlichkeit von unternehmerischen Entscheidungsgremien und zielt dabei darauf ab zu beurteilen, ob die Einführung von geschlechtlichen Mindestquoten von Vorteil sein kann, wenn es darum geht die Ehrlichkeit von Entscheidungsträgerschaften zu verbessern. Es wird aufgebaut auf Harrigan (1981) argumentiert, dass diversifizierte Entscheidungsgremien, aufgrund ihrer erhöhten Sensibilität für die Belange aller Stakeholder, ehrlichere Entscheidungen treffen als dies homogene Entscheidungsträgerschaften im Durschnitt tun. Die Argumentation erfolgt in drei separaten Kapiteln. Kapitel eins legt anhand von theoretisch fundierter Literatur dar, dass die Diversifizierung von Entscheidungsgremien und deren dadurch gesteigerte Ehrlichkeit, implementierenden Unternehmen beim Meistern von drei verschiedenen Herausforderungen behilflich sein kann. Bei den drei Herausforderungen handelt es sich um die Prinzipal-Agenten-Problematik, die Sicherung der Unabhängigkeit von Unternehmen nach der „Resource Dependence Theory“ und dem Aufbau von Legitimität nach Suchman (1995). Kapitel zwei untermauert die theoretisch fundierte Argumentation aus Kapitel eins. Dafür wird belegt, dass die in Kapitel eins vermuteten Beziehungen auch empirisch nachweisbar, das heißt in der Realität beobachtbar sind. Wie zuvor angenommen bestätigt die empirisch fundierte Literatur, einen positiven Zusammenhang zwischen diversifizierten Entscheidungsgremien und sozialer Performance und damit auch Ehrlichkeit. In Kapitel drei wird die Beziehung von diversifizierten Entscheidungsgremien und Ehrlichkeit konkret getestet. Dazu wurde in einem Setup mit realen Vergütungen überprüft, ob diversifizierte Entscheidungsgremien tatsächlich ehrlichere Entscheidungen treffen als homogene Entscheidungsträgerschaften, obwohl Unehrlichkeit für sie zu einer strikt größeren Auszahlung führen würde. Dabei ist es nicht gelungen empirisch zu bestätigen, dass sich diversifizierte Entscheidungsgremien ehrlicher verhalten als ihre homogenen Gegenstücke. Es ist jedoch gelungen nachzuweisen, dass Frauen ein größeres Ausmaß an Vertrauen entgegengebracht wird als Männern. Das heißt Teilnehmer waren davon überzeugt, dass sich Frauen ehrlicher verhalten als Männer. Dies hat praxisorientiertes Anwendungspotenzial. So ist es durch die Diversifizierung von Entscheidungsgremien möglich das gruppeninterne Vertrauen zu steigern. Dies muss jedoch nicht unbedingt bedeuten, dass die Einführung von obligatorischen Mindestquoten für Frauen als sinnstiftend betrachtet werden sollte. Es ist unklar, wie sich dieses gesteigerte Vertrauen auf die Ehrlichkeit von Entscheidungsgremien auswirkt. Es ist plausibel, dass Entscheidungsgremien mit einem hohen, internen Vertrauen einen größeren Hang zu Unehrlichkeit, beziehungsweise Amtsmissbrauch aufweisen, da sie implizit vom Stillschweigen ihrer Teammitglieder überzeugt sind.

Katastrophenereignisse und die damit verbundenen Versicherungsschäden bedeuten eine grosse Herausforderung für die Versicherungsbranche. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Verbriefung von Versicherungsrisiken anhand von Katastrophenanleihen und deren Bedeutung für den Investor und Sponsor. Die Analyse beinhaltet konkrete Beispiele von Cat Bonds, womit deren Funktionsweise und Ausgestaltung aufgezeigt werden. Anhand von Cat Bonds können Verluste aus Naturkatastrophen abgesichert und so Kapazitätsengpässe vermieden werden. Obwohl die Renditen in jüngster Zeit sanken, sind Cat Bonds nach wie vor ein attraktives Instrument, da sie vor allem auch eine geringe Korrelation zu traditionellen Anlageklassen aufweisen und damit ein hohes Diversifikationspotential bieten.

The practice of good corporate governance is key to the long-term success of companies. A survey was conducted to evaluate the preferences and opinions of companies and institutional investors on topics regarding voting rights, compensation, the board of directors, and other current issues. A particular focus was set on governance activism and Corporate Social Responsibility. The answers of the different groups of participants were compared to each other and to previous surveys. The survey empirically underpins the increasing importance of direct interactions between companies and their investors.

Empirical observations and microeconomic theory suggest that economic profit margins tend to mean-revert under competitive forces. The present empirical study examines this phenomenon based on a global sample of more than 10,000 listed firms between 1966 and 2016. We provide further support that a firm’s economic profit converges toward a long-term profitability level by fitting the data in an autoregressive (AR1) exponential decay model. The quantification of how fast and to which extent the profit margin develops allows for valuation practitioners to model the profits in a terminal value that incorporates a firm’s expected profit cycle more realistically and explicitly.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the potential impacts, including chances and/or risks, the Brexit vote could have on the investment banking, the asset management and the private banking industries in the United Kingdom (UK), the European Union (EU) and Switzerland. The “exit deal” both parties will achieve, determines the vehemence of the impacts on the different industries in the different regions. A “hard” Brexit would be the worst outcome for the UK’s industries, while producing specific opportunities for them. Based on this particular scenario, the industries in the EU could benefit from the Brexit, while negative impacts might arise. For the case of Switzerland, the country plays a minor role in this “conflict” and could on one hand benefit from the vote, but negative consequences should be considered. Howev-er, a “soft” Brexit would be the most harmless outcome for all parties.

Einerseits soll variable Vergütung die Erreichung von Zwischenzielen auf dem Weg zur strategischen Zielerreichung honorieren; andererseits soll die langfristige Aus-richtung auf Wertgenerierung gesichert sein. Mit den heutigen Incentive-Systemen wird oft nicht die gewünschte Wirkung erzielt. Wir stellen ein System von «Strategi-schen Aktienzuteilungen» («Stock Awards for Right Strategy», STARS) vor, das diese beiden Ziele miteinander verknüpft.

Wealth management constitutes an important aspect of today's banking world, but very little is known about what explains the differences among banks in their ability to attract new assets under management. Using a unique panel database of Swiss private banks, we test the hypothesis that the performance of a bank in attracting new money depends on two input factors: skill and reputation. Relatively skilled banks -- that is, banks that are more cost-efficient than predicted by their input factors -- also perform better in attracting net new money. We also find that negative media coverage (such as in the context of fraudulent business practices related to tax evasion) strongly diminishes the future ability to attract assets under management, especially at small banks. The present value of lost profits is 3.35 (0.73) times the median annual net profit of a small (large) bank. Thus, adding to the explicit fines that many Swiss banks had to pay in the course of the U.S. Department of Justice's investigations, there are substantial implicit and reputational costs to banks of having negative media coverage. Investment performance for clients seems not to explain future net new money growth. In sum, these results underscore the importance of trust in money management.
