Florian Schwab, Thorsten Hens, Investieren nach Covid, In: Die Weltwoche, 11 November 2021. (Media Coverage)

Villem-Adolf Armulik, Investigating Rate of Return on VIX Options, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2021. (Master's Thesis)
In this paper we investigate the returns of VIX options. We investigate how the distribution of VIX option returns look like with respect to the options moneyness i.e the risk neutral probability that the option expire ITM. Sec-
ondly we look at how the returns behave with respect to time by shorting the options and holding the positions until expiration. In the case of moneyness we find that there has been enough tail events over the lifetime of VIX
options that even deep OTM calls produce returns not different from unity.
Put option returns exhibit slight favourite-longshot bias. When it comes to where the returns from shorting VIX options are concentrated short dated call options perform the best. We find that shorting front-month call options one day before expiration results in an annual return of 9.87% and a Sharpe ratio of 3.95.

Chenxin Nie, Deep Generation of Financial Time Series with GANs, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2021. (Master's Thesis)
The objective of this paper is to apply Wasserstein GAN with gradient penalty to financial time series and investigate the fidelity of generated financial series. Training with real daily and intra-day market data, the WGAN-GP model is able to generate high-fidelity synthetic time series. The quality of generated data varies among different asset classes due to the availability and characteristics of the data. Moreover, the frequency of the data does not affect the quality of synthetic data. The features of both daily and intra-day data can be captured by the model. |

Andreas Beck, Thorsten Hens, Schöner Schein des guten Geldes, In: Die Weltwoche, 25 August 2021. (Media Coverage)

Niejai Nithiyakumanan, Sustainable investing in developed and developing countries – A case study based on Sri Lanka and Switzerland, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2021. (Bachelor's Thesis)
Sustainable investments are growing in importance, not only for governments but also for retail investors. Because the needs of sustainability and its perception are different in the various regions of the world, sustainable investments differ from country to country. Nevertheless, the goal of these investments is the same, as they all seek to make the world a better place in which to live. Various studies have discovered that developed countries are shifting their investment attention from environmental factors towards social factors, while developing countries are focusing more on their predominant local environmental problems. This research finds the same tendency, as investors from developing countries do tend to focus more on local problems than on global problems. There are also many motives for sustainable investments, but commercial motives do not play a major role for investors with preferences for sustainability. |

Marco Zimmermann, Aktives vs. passives Anlegen auf dem Kryptowährungsmarkt anhand des CCi30, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2021. (Bachelor's Thesis)

Manuel Ferrari, Die Value Anomalie – Eine Erklärung im CAPM mit heterogenem Verhalten, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2021. (Bachelor's Thesis)

Adrian Arab, Thorsten Hens, El Salvador: Wie Staatspräsident Bukele sein Land zum Bitcoin-Hub formen will, In: home.1und1.de, 14 July 2021. (Media Coverage)

Santiago Walliser, Ahead or behind the curve The impact of public and private information in option-implied sentiment , University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2021. (Master's Thesis)
We investigate the stock return predictive power at the weekly level of an option-implied sentiment time series that captures private information, in combination with public company-specific and market news sentiment. We provide strong evidence that sentiment variables explain variations in option price summa-rizing features at the weekly level. The effects seem to be asymmetric along the moneyness axis. Further-more, we document that aggregate market sentiment has a higher impact than company level sentiment. In addition, we find that news published during the trading period tend to have less information content and are mostly related to the overall stock market. Conversely, news published after the market closes have more impact as they are more complex and thus contain more information content. Using an orthogonal-ization procedure in which we remove the market sentiment drift component in company level sentiments, we are able to increase their information content. Based on these findings, we develop a model to predict stock returns using private and public information extracted from the options market. We discover that ATM implied volatilities orthogonalized to news sentiment have strong predictive power alongside market level consensus. A trading strategy based on this model exhibits a significant alpha with an annualized return of 18.38% and an information ratio of 0.98 over the entire period of almost twenty years analyzed.
Key words: stock return predictability, option markets, private information, news sentiment, non-trading hour information, market level sentiment, company-specific sentiment |

Lorena Tassone, Eine krisensichere Kryptowährung, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2021. (Bachelor's Thesis)
