This paper studies the Cass-Koopmans-Ramsey model of optimal economic growth in the presence of loss aversion and habit formation. The representative agent's preferences for consumption can be gradually varied between the standard constant intertemporal elasticity of substitution (CIES) case and Kahneman and Tversky's prospect utility. We find that the transitional dynamics of optimal consumption paths differ distinctly from the standard model, in particular consumption smoothing is more pronounced. We also show that prospect utility can cause the economy to remain in a steady state with low consumption and low capital.

Mit Hilfe der Management Guidance wird durch kapitalmarktorientierte Unternehmen in unterschiedlicher Form über die voraussichtliche Entwicklung wesentlicher Geschäftszahlen berichtet. Vorliegende empirische Arbeiten gehen einheitlich davon aus, dass eine Punktprognose der erwarteten zukünftigen Kennzahlen anderen Formen vorzuziehen ist. Über die diesbezüglichen Präferenzen professioneller Kapitalmarktteilnehmer liegen bisher jedoch kaum gesicherte Erkenntnisse vor. Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht daher auf Basis einer Fragebogenstudie die entsprechenden Präferenzen dieser wichtigen Zielgruppe. An der Befragung nahmen insgesamt 123 Kapitalmarktteilnehmer teil, insb. Sell- und Buy-Side-Analysten sowie Asset Manager. Entgegen den bisherigen Annahmen wird eine Intervallprognose als hilfreicher angesehen als eine Punktschätzung. Weitergehende Analysen erlauben Einblicke in die Präferenzen einzelner Berufsgruppen.

This book presents a selection of ten papers on three specific fields of financial market research. As a help for readers, the table below shows the field to which each paper belongs, and lists the title, author(s) and place or state of publication. Most of these articles went through a peer-review process1 and have already appeared in scholarly journals or books. While focusing on different areas, my papers have the common goal of enhancing the understanding of financial markets, in particular of shedding light on seemingly inefficient aspects of the financial markets and the behaviour of traders.

We investigate whether individual experiences of macroeconomic shocks affect financial risk taking, as often suggested for the generation that experienced the Great Depression. Using data from the Survey of Consumer Finances from 1960 to 2007, we find that individuals who have experienced low stock market returns throughout their lives so far report lower willingness to take financial risk, are less likely to participate in the stock market, invest a lower fraction of their liquid assets in stocks if they participate, and are more pessimistic about future stock returns. Those who have experienced low bond returns are less likely to own bonds. Results are estimated controlling for age, year effects, and household characteristics. More recent return experiences have stronger effects, particularly on younger people.

In the modern world of finance, understanding the drivers of asset value is crucial. This thesis is divided into three research articles that covers various aspects of this issue. The first paper estimates the pricing kernel from equity data. The pricing kernel is an essential tool to price a given random stream of payment, for example, a stock. While standard economic theory suggests a decreasing pricing kernel; empirical literature on the other hand often finds a U-shaped one. The main contribution of this paper to the existing literature is the systematic testing of the increasing parts for statistical significance and the finding that the increases are not statistically significant. Even if not significant, the U-shaped pricing kernels are found in various datasets and in different time periods, thus indicating the existence of increasing parts in the kernel. It is also found that the U-shape can be obtained by estimating the kernel with various functional forms, thereby ruling out the role of the specificity of the pricing kernel functional form. The second paper develops a model to analyze the impact of financial constraints on the value and investment behavior of a firm. The model explains many puzzling effects found in empirical literature such as the high-growth, high-risk nature of small firms, pro-cyclical investment behavior, the leverage effect and the higher average returns of value stocks. The last paper uses simulations to show that in the long run, a strategy based on the fundamental value of an asset (more specifically, the expected discounted value of dividend payments) is better than many other potentially irrational investment strategies and that this is particularly true when firms can default and dividends are nonstationary. This finding extends the existing literature on evolutionary finance. In modernen Finanzmärkten ist es wichtig zu verstehen, wie der Wert eines Wertpapiers bestimmt wird. Diese Dissertation behandelt dieses Thema in drei Teilen. Der erste Teil schätzt den Pricing Kernel mit Hilfe von Aktiendaten. Mit dem Pricing Kernel kann der Wert eines zufälligen Zahlungsstroms, z. B. einer Aktie, bestimmt werden. Gemäss den üblichen ökonomischen An- nahmen muss der Kernel fallend sein; empirische Schätzungen finden jedoch häufig U-förmige Teile im Pricing Kernel. Im Wesentlichen zeigt dieser Teil, dass die steigenden Teile im Kernel nicht statistisch signifikant sind. Jedoch kann die U-Form in verschiedenen Datensätzen und Zeitperioden gefunden werden. Dies deutet darauf hin, dass der Kernel trotzdem steigende Teile enthalten kann. Gestützt wird dies durch die Tatsache, dass die U-Form bestehen bleibt, auch wenn unterschiedliche funktionale Formen für den Kernel verwendet werden. Der zweite Teil entwickelt und analysiert, was mit dem Wert und den Investitionen einer Firma geschieht, wenn diese keinen Zugriff auf externe Finanzierung hat. Es stellt sich heraus, dass verschiedene Puzzles aus der empirischen Literatur, wie das hohe Wachstum und Risiko kleiner Firmen, das pro-zyklische Investitionsverhalten, der Leverage Effekt oder die höhere Durchschnittsrendite von Value Aktien, dadurch erklärt werden können. Der letzte Teil simuliert Investitionsstrategien. Dabei wird aufgezeigt, dass sich eine Strategie, welche auf Basis der Fundamentalwerte der Firmen (der Summe der erwarteten, abdiskontierten Dividendenzahlungen) investiert, eine bessere langfristige Performance erzielt als andere potentiell irrationale Strategien. Dies gilt im Besonderen auch dann, wenn die Dividenden nicht stationär sind und Firmen Bankrott gehen können. Letzteres trägt zur Erweiterung der bestehenden Literatur in Evolutionary Finance bei.

This paper introduces and analyzes an evolutionary model of a financial marketwith a risk-free asset. Focus is on the study of local stability of the wealth dynamics through the application of recent results on the linearization and stability of random dynamical systems (Evstigneev et al. Proc Am Math Soc 139:1061–1072, 2011). Conditions are derived for the linearization of the model at an equilibrium state which ensure local convergence of sample paths to this equilibrium. The paper also shows that the concept of local stability is closely related to the notion of evolutionary stability. A locally evolutionarily stable investmentstrategy in the evolutionary model with a risk-free asset is derived, extending previousresearch. The method illustrated here is applicable for the analysis of manifold economic and financial dynamic models involving randomness.

The paper examines a game-theoretic evolutionary model of an asset marketwith endogenous equilibrium asset prices. Assets pay dividends that are partially consumed and partially reinvested. The investors use general, adaptive strategies (portfolio rules), distributing their wealth between assets, depending on the exogenous states of the world and the observed history of the game. The main objective of the work is to identify strategies, allowing an investor to “survive”, i.e. to possess a positive, bounded away from zero, share ofmarket wealth over the whole infinite time horizon. This work brings together recent studies on evolutionary finance with the classical topic of non-cooperative market games.

Dieser Beitrag will, nüchtern und fernab jeden politischen Kalküls, die Objektförderung in der Stadt Zürich unter ökonomischen Gesichtspunkten betrachten. Drei einfache, aber dennoch fundamentale Fragen stehen dabei im Zentrum: Ist die Förderung effektiv? Ist sie effizient? Ist sie gerecht? Auf dieser Basis werden sowohl die Vor- wie auch die Nachteile der Objektförderung in Zürich erörtert – dies wohl wissend, dass der Beitrag kein Ersatz für eine vollständige Analyse dieser komplexen und nach wie vor politisch brisanten Materie sein kann. Gleichzeitig sollen auch einige «urbane Legenden» rund um Kosten und Nutzen der Objektförderung aufgedeckt und auf das bisher vernachlässigte Potential der Subjektförderung hingewiesen werden
