We show that in a consumption-based asset-pricing model with hyperbolic discounting - leading to dynamically inconsistent time preferences - the value premium increases nonlinearly with the degree of discounting and thus affects the cross section of returns. To test our model empirically, we relate the size of the value premium in 41 countries to the degree of hyperbolic discounting across those countries. The latter was found in an International Test of Risk Attitudes (INTRA). Our result is robust to the inclusion of other variables from INTRA, such as risk aversion, as well as micro- and macro-economic variables from the 41 countries.

Two tests can help asset managers to develop more robust investment strategies: an impact test and a survival test. Both tests complement the backtest, in which one checks how a proposed investment strategy would have performed in the past. The impact test considers the performance of the strategy when assets under management grow (crowdedness), and it checks the impact that growth in assets under management in competing strategies has on the proposed strategy (cross impact). The survival test considers the effect of the long-term evolution of assets under management in competition for market capital. Using Shiller’s S&P 500 index and bond market data, we show that time-series momentum (relative strength) performs best in the backtest and the impact test but that an expected relative cash-flow rule (relative dividend yield) has the best long-term survival properties.

Altersvorsorge und Aktien passen für viele nicht zusammen. Tun sie aber doch, erst recht mit günstigen Indexfonds. Capital erklärt, wie man mit ETFs für den Ruhestand Vermögen aufbaut. Üblicherweise geizen Anlagegurus mit konkreten Tipps, wie private Investoren ihr Geld anlegen sollten. Warren Buffett, einer der erfolg- reichsten Investoren aller Zeiten, ist in dieser Hinsicht anders. Seine Briefe an die Aktionäre und Reden auf Hauptversammlungen sind gespickt mit Anlagetipps: Er rät zum Kauf von ETFs (Indexfonds). „Wenn Sie in einen extrem günstigen Indexfonds investieren und Ihre Anlage über zehn Jahre mit einem Sparplan strecken, schlagen Sie 90 Prozent der Leute, die zeitgleich mit Ihnen investieren“, erklärte er schon 2004. „Suchen Sie sich einen sehr einfachen Index wie den S&P 500, einen sehr günstigen Indexfonds darauf, und strecken Sie Ihre Anlage über einen Sparplan“, empfahl er 2013. Um schließlich ein Jahr darauf in einem Brief an seine Investoren seinen Erben einen Tipp zum Umgang mit seinem Milliardenvermögen zu geben. „Stecken Sie es zu zehn Prozent in sichere Staatsanleihen und zu 90 Prozent in einen extrem günstigen S&P-500-ETF. Die Langfristrendite dieser Strategie wird die der meisten anderen Anleger schlagen.“ Einen größeren Ritterschlag kann es für eine simple Anlagestrategie – die Einmalanlage oder Sparpläne mit ETFs auf bekannte Indizes – kaum geben. Selbst einer der erfolgreichsten aktiven Manager aller Zeiten, der mehr als 50 Jahre im Schnitt 21 Prozent pro Jahr für seine Anleger holte, setzt auf günstige ETFs, die einen Index kopieren. Indexfonds sind börsengehandelte Fonds, die in ihrem Kursverlauf exakt einem bestimmten Index auf Aktien, Anleihen oder alle möglichen Assetklassen folgen. Institutionelle Investoren nutzen sie schon seit Langem – für private Anleger sind sie jedoch noch vergleichsweise neu. Dabei sind ETFs gerade für diese Klientel interessant, weil sie anders als aktiv gemanagte Fonds extrem günstige Gebühren aufweisen. Das macht sie auch für den langfristigen Vermögensaufbau über 20 oder 30 Jahre, etwa für die Altersvorsorge, so interessant.

The present thesis aims at uncovering the determinants of time on market (TOM) for the Swiss home ownership market. More particularly, advertisement times for homes listed on homegate.ch, a leading digital real estate marketplace, are being studied. For this purpose, a two-stage regression approach is adapted, where a spatial hedonic model is estimated in the first and a TOM model in the second stage. Among other findings, results of this study suggest that TOM is significantly related to overpricing. On average, listing a home 10% above the market-adjusted listing price prolongs TOM by 2.1 days.

This paper deals with the performance of technical analysis tools in equity markets. After a short introduction to the theory of the efficient market hypothesis and the current state of research on the performance of technical analysis tools, the most commonly used technical indicators are presented. These are the Exponential Moving Average (EMA), Simple Moving Average (SMA), Bollinger Bands©, Relative Strength Index (RSI) and the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD). In the first step, a trading strategy is developed for each indicator. Then different combinations of two indicators are implemented to get trading signals that have a higher accuracy rate. The parameters are optimized, a stop-loss or trailing-stop loss level is added to increase the performance of the strategies. The performance of these strategies is then compared with the one of the Buy and Hold strategy. Various statistics are used to measure the profit and the risk-return ratio. In a final step, these strategies are applied to five other financial markets. Namely, the Bovespa Index (Brazil), Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index (China), Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitivity Index (India), Nikkei Heikin Kabuka (Japan) and the Bitcoin. It turned out that the strategies developed performed well on the ETF TRUST S&P 500. With each of the implemented strategies except for the EMA and SMA strategy, it is possible to achieve a better risk-return ratio than with the Buy and Hold strategy. The absolute profit is also better with all strategies except for the EMA, SMA and MACD strategy. But no additional insight can be gained when applying these strategies to the other five financial markets. It is not possible to achieve an excess profit in all tested markets with one of the developed strategies. The only conclusion that could be reached is that strategies based on one indicator tend to perform better.

Tactical asset allocation decisions are often based on (and justified by) macroeconomic developments and valuation ratios. However, why should using such publicly available information provide an investment edge? This article investigates whether a simple combination approach based on popular indicators can improve a multi-asset portfolio’s performance. The author developed a method to assess each asset class’s attractiveness using standard and economically motivated indicators from four scientifically valid areas (valuation, trend, risk, and macroeconomics). Each indicator was evaluated relative to its own history, assigned a percentile score, and over- or underweights per asset class were determined based on the combined, equal-weighted score. This intuitive method generated high information ratios and a significant outperformance for a portfolio invested in stocks and bonds in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Eurozone, and Japan. The results held up in various robustness checks and were stronger for riskier assets. The individual indicators as well as the resulting scores can be presented in a dashboard.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging field of cultural finance. It summarizes research results of cultural differences in financial decision making and financial markets. Many of the results have been published in leading academic journals over the last ten years but some are presented here for the first time. The book is based on an international survey on risk and time preferences - the INTRA study, conducted in 53 countries worldwide. Applications to financial markets include the equity premium puzzle, the value premium, dividend payout policies and asset allocations.
