Thorsten Hens, Fatemeh Naebi, Behavioural heterogeneity in the capital asset pricing model with an application to the low-beta anomaly, Applied Economics Letters, Vol. 28 (6), 2021. (Journal Article)
This study extends the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) to situations where a subset of investors is not the mean-variance optimizers. The security market line (SML) relationship of the CAPM is shown to hold when beta is suitably adjusted in the presence of such investors. The adjusted CAPM is then used to show which of the non-mean-variance behaviour is needed to explain the so-called CAPM anomalies. For instance, the adjusted CAPM explains the low-beta anomaly if the non-mean-variance investors overweight (underweight) the high-beta (low-beta) assets. Interestingly, the empirical analysis showed that two-thirds of the investors are needed to deviate from the mean-variance analysis in order to explain the low-beta anomaly. |

licher», sagt Tobias Trütsch, Ökonom an

Thomas Puschmann, Christian Hugo Hoffmann, Valentyn Khmarskyi, How Green FinTech Can Alleviate the Impact of Climate Change - The Case of Switzerland, Sustainability, Vol. 12 (24), 2020. (Journal Article)
The financial services industry is currently undergoing a major transformation, with digitization and sustainability being the core drivers. While both concepts have been researched in recent years, their intersection, often conceived as “green FinTech,” remains under‐determined. Therefore, this paper contributes to this important discussion about green FinTech by, first, synthesizing the relevant literature systematically. Second, it shows the results of an empirical, in‐ depth analysis of the Swiss FinTech landscape both in terms of green FinTech startups as well as the services offered by the incumbents. The research results show that literature in this new domain has only emerged recently, is mostly characterized by a specific focus on isolated aspects of green FinTech and does not provide a comprehensive perspective on the topic yet. In addition, the results from the literature and the market analysis indicate that green FinTech has an impact along the whole value chain of financial services covering customer‐to‐customer (c2c), business‐to‐customer (b2c), and business‐to‐business (b2b) services. Today the field is predominantly captured by startup companies in contrast to the incumbents whose solutions are still rare. |

Dario Quattrocchi, A Greenhouse Gas Emission Mapping Tool: Considering the Interconnection in Corporate Value Chains Using Machine Learning to Promote Efficiency Gains, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2020. (Master's Thesis)
In the wake of climate change, it is essential to manage the concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere by lowering overall emissions. If climate change is not tackled in a drastic way now, the consequences for planet Earth will be dramatic and irreversible. Corporates in particular account for the biggest share of GHG emissions and must, therefore, change the way they operate. The high-emitting sectors like electricity, transportation, forestry and land use, cement, steel and oil and gas (O&G) must undergo restructuring in order to reduce the industries’ emissions. Along the globalization of value chains, it becomes increasingly important to manage the emissions across them. This includes indirect emissions that companies are not directly responsible for, but which are a consequence of their activities. Consequently, these emissions can be influenced by the company so that it can incentivize GHG reductions upstream and downstream of their operations. This requires companies to disclose their environmental data and thus, increase the transparency of emission distributions across complete value chains. However, this degree of disclosure currently leaves much to be desired. The present thesis tries to tackle this issue by developing a tool that improves the transparency and thus, the understanding of the emission sources in value chains. The beneficiaries of this insights are the corporates themselves, as well as global asset owners and institutional investors seeking to hold zero-carbon portfolios. In their increasingly important role in driving and leading the transition towards a zero-carbon economy, institutional investors must build coalitions and engage with their investees to reduce overall corporate GHG emissions. By providing additional information about the distribution and interconnection of GHG emissions in value chains, possible inefficiencies and bottlenecks can be identified, which the investors then can engage with in order to reduce their emissions and thus, optimize the value chain’s sustainability degree. The proof-of-concept (POC) of the tool shows that there are issues linked to the data that serves as input. This result again points to the poor quality of environmental data and to the necessity to resolve this issue as soon as possible by companies disclosing this data and cooperating with their stakeholders, as well as by harmonizing the existing accounting and reporting rules. The tool is a valuable fundament to provide first hints of inefficiencies in value chains. Moreover, it offers many enhancement opportunities and once the underlying data is more complete and more accurate, the tool can provide more accurate insights. The optimization problem the tool tries to solve can be supported by machine learning applications in order to get high-quality insights that can be leveraged to substantially reduce GHG emissions in corporate value chains. This paper contributes to the literature on indirect value chain emissions and on machine learning applications in climate contexts.

Dominik Zuber, Cryptocurrency as Investment Opportunity, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2020. (Bachelor's Thesis)
The accelerating global dissemination and adoption of cryptocurrency and blockchain
technology is undisputed. Retail as well as institutional investors show an increasing interest in cryptocurrency and do not want to miss the opportunity of what could be the next big thing. However, the majority of them is still unaware of the fundamentals and basics about
cryptocurrency and especially does not understand the technology behind it. This comes certainly from the fact that there is only little literature about this new and complicated asset
class, and it is mostly only focused on specific fields and does not provide a comprehensive
overview, which could help to understand the contexts. For this reason, this thesis gives an
in-depth insight into the space of cryptocurrencies and decentralized blockchain technology in order to educate investors about it. Besides the analysis of the characteristics and the demonstration of the potential cryptocurrencies have, limitations and risks are pointed out.
For one thing, the revolutionary decentralized blockchain technology is able to improve
weaknesses in the current financial system as well as in several other sectors. On the other hand, regulatory challenges, the involvement in criminal activities and environmental concerns scare investors away. Nevertheless, an investment in Bitcoin, Ethereum or other cryptocurrencies helps to improve the diversification of a portfolio consisting of conventional assets and should therefore be considered.

Igor Evstigneev, Thorsten Hens, Valeriya Potapova, Klaus Reiner Schenk-Hoppé, Behavioral Equilibrium and Evolutionary Dynamics in Asset Markets, Journal of Mathematical Economics, Vol. 91, 2020. (Journal Article)
This paper analyzes a dynamic stochastic equilibrium model of an asset market based on behavioral and evolutionary principles. The core of the model is a non-traditional game-theoretic framework combining elements of stochastic dynamic games and evolutionary game theory. Its key characteristic feature is that it relies only on objectively observable market data and does not use hidden individual agents' characteristics (such as their utilities and beliefs). A central goal of the study is to identify an investment strategy that allows an investor to survive in the market selection process, i.e., to keep with probability one a strictly positive, bounded away from zero share of market wealth over an infinite time horizon, irrespective of the strategies used by the other players. The main results show that under very general assumptions, such a strategy exists, is asymptotically unique and easily computable. |

This note illustrates a simple but important insight for financial investment. In a heterogeneous agent‐based evolutionary finance market model with long‐lived assets, markets are stable if clients of fundamental ("value") investment funds are more patient than clients of other funds. |

Lou Neal Müller, Finanzierungskapazitäten und Risikomanagement der Schweizer KMU , University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2020. (Bachelor's Thesis)

Thomas Puschmann, Sayaka Shiba, Blockchain-enabled Sustainability, In: University of Zurich, No. 2, 2020. (Working Paper)
Blockchain has emerged as a novel technology since the introduction of Bitcoin in 2008. While research in this field has developed in various fields, the connection between blockchain and sustainability remains largely unexplored. This paper analyses the existing literature and start-up landscape at the intersection of blockchain and sustainability and develops an agenda for future research. First, the literature is used to develop a framework (building blocks) for sustainability related blockchain concepts. Based on this framework existing start-ups in this field are analyzed in more detail to understand their current focus. The analysis reveals that primarily the energy sector and the financial services industry are currently working on approaches for including sustainability models based on blockchain. However, the underlying business models are mostly concentrated on improving operational efficiency rather than focusing on customer intimacy or product leadership. Finally, the majority of approaches contributes to the sustainable development goals 7 (reduced inequalities), 9 (build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), 12 (responsible consumption and production), 13 (climate action) 15 (life on land), and 17 (partnerships) while other SDGs have been less relevant until now.

Zora Müller, Illiquidität und zyklische Preisdynamik im Immobilienmarkt, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2020. (Master's Thesis)

Tanja Lanz, Volatility-Managed Currency Strategies, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2020. (Master's Thesis)
Momentum and carry strategies are common ways to take profits from foreign exchange markets. While currency momentum strategies are less skewed towards the negative, they underperform currency carry strategies in terms of risk adjusted returns. Though the carry strategy is known among investors for its high risk adjusted returns, every once and then the strategy crashes and wipes out years of gains within few weeks.
This fact motivates the investigation of signals which indicate the strategies’ downand upscaling in order to reduce negative skewness for carry strategies and increase average excess returns for momentum, while reducing volatility overall. Literature has documented that crashes in the FX market for both strategies frequently happen when market volatility is high. Thus, several papers suggest the investigation of volatility measures to take as indicators. While Burnside et al. (2011a) or Brunnermeier et al. (2008) have done their analysis using implied volatility, Moreira and Muir (2017) and Menkho↵ et al. (2012a) used realized variance instead.
This paper adds to existing literature with its examination of a variety of indicators and scaling methods. Importantly, this paper bases the analysis on a wide cross-section of currencies, comprising of both emerging market (EM) currencies and developed market (DM) currencies. While some papers have examined the one or the other, the author is unaware of a direct comparison between volatility managed currency strategies in developed and emerging markets. Further, the paper aims at analyzing the magnitude of performance contribution of this volatility management over time and more precisely between the market crises in 2008 and 2020.

Paul Céjka, Analyse der Markteffizienz in verschiedenen Segmenten des deutschen Aktienmarkts, University of Zurich, Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics, 2020. (Bachelor's Thesis)
